Indeed a home Indeed a home

by Lojan V on January 31, 2017

Kodianthara is indeed a home. Although the owners were not at home they contacted us and took care off us long distance. The house is old and quirky. With many nooks and crannies. The maid made a very tastful lunch with fresh fish and several other dishes. We took a rest in the rocking chairs on the veranda. Our bedrooms were situated in the main house. Again the diner was perfect. Very fresh and tastful. The next day the owner mr. Crispin and his wife were at home and we had very nice chat about the history of the house and the family. They made us really feel at home. Today again great food. Mr. Crispin made us a fabulous breakfast and after a tour through the garden we sadly had to leave.

The warmest hosts ever! The warmest hosts ever!

We completely enjoyed our time staying with Crispin and his wife Sony. They treat their guests more like family friends than clients. Their heritage home is very lovely and from it we took walks in the village and both a canoe-like boat for birdwatching in the canals and a small boat out along Lake Vembanad. We packed a lot into a short time. They also took us to see a year-end music, dance & story-telling performance at the high school where Sony teaches and directed a wonderful musical play. The staff at the Hotel was very helpful and all the meals were excellent. What a lovely experience! [Note: Drivers have a hard time finding the place because they want people to call or connect first by email, but it is just behind the St.John Knanaya Church near the southern waterway.

What a location What a location

Our driver found the property after asking several locals for directions as it is tucked away well off the beaten track. The house is surrounded by palms, bananas trees and many beautiful flowering plants. The house itself has a very interesting history the owner Mr Crispin enjoyed sharing with us. We slept in the main house in a smallish room with a private bathroom. The bed linen and towels could do with upgrading and the rooms just need a thorough refreshing. The verandah was a lovely place to sit out on an evening and listen to the different creatures noises. We were asked what type of food we liked and we were certainly looked after very well at the dining table. Our agent had booked the houseboat for us for the third night of our stay but we were asked to change this to the first night instead. We enjoyed the trip and views of the lake and backwaters as we are interested in bird life. It was such a shame the bathroom was not up to the standards we had hoped; we preferred to shower on our return to the home stay. The air conditioning was an extra cost which we needed to pay due to the high nighttime temperature. We were dropped ashore to buy the catch of the day if we wanted for the cook to supplement our dinner on board. Mr Crispin asked if we wanted to visit his club for dinner which was a lovely idea but we did not realise that he was not staying with us and just dropped us off and left to conduct some business. Mr Crispin arranged for us to have a canoe trip along the backwaters but there was confusion as to the price charged by the boatman which was higher than we expected - we arranged for our home stay bill to be reduced accordingly. The house staff worked very hard and tried to please. Mrs Crispin, although under the weather, was very pleasant to chat too.
