What can I say about this hotel? We read the reviews and wished We hadn't, but you know, although it has its faults and quirks the place certainly isn't as bad as it's made out. The rooms are huge, bright and have all you need in them, the TV didn't work but I don't come to India to watch TV. The cleaning can be hit and miss, but we were unaware that in order to let staff know that you want your room cleaned, you have to place your key in the bowl at reception ( this could've been explained when we got there) but our shower worked, so did the air con, the staff can be a bit surly and clueless at times but not at all nasty with it. Electricity went of a couple of times in our two week stay but it does everywhere in Kovalam. I have stayed in better hotels in Kovalam but the price is ok and the location is brilliant. The hotel does however have one redeeming feature and that is the restaurant attached to it. It's beautifully decorated, modern, tasteful, nicely lit and just ever so slightly off the well beaten track of the constant train of sellers that are permanently on sentry duty up and down the front.(I understand they have to make a living but it gets a little too much at times when the same guy selling stone elephants or cigarettes asks you every time he passes if you've changed your mind about buying a stone elephant or cigarettes, hell! you only saw him ten minutes ago!!!)
We ate at the restaurant twice and both times we walked away full of tasty, beautifully cooked, good value food, made by a chef that was proud of what he turned out. The tandoori chicken was one of the best I'd ever tasted, it comes with a fine shredded salad that is in itself a dish worth tasting on its own. It wasn't expensive and the chef was on hand to oversee that nothing was missing. You still get a lovely sea view and the peace and ambience was refreshing and a welcome change from the bustle and commercialism only 50 yards further down the front. Stay here if you want to be seconds from the beach. Don't if you want flawless accommodation.
rooms clean ...found out after 5 days, staff would clean rooms daily if you give them the key..(:) somebody should have told that...staff friendly and helpful in every question, breakfast was less,,but if you ask for more they arranged..Aaron the ceo manager ,was very friendly and explained us the way of how some things functioned or not(:)) Wifi was working till the beach ..most time and if the power was not stopped most time we had AC
We booked this hotel via hotels.com and stayed at the hotel in Nov 2016. The room was so basic you might as well had stayed in an hostel. They had continuous power cuts and no back up generator either, so we were given candles to light up the room. The view from our room was a part of waste land with rubbish dumped in it also. There was no hot water from the shower for the whole duration and the rusty shower head flew off at one point when the shower was turned on. The TV did not work in the room and the sink tap was spurting out brownish water. The AC generator stuck outside on the wall kept coming on throughout the night waking us up. I asked for an iron to be given a rusty forty year old iron which made me laugh. The owner has not spent much on this hotel and is very basic. Stay at your own peril!
Stayed here with my family ( all adults) for a few night during our visit in Kovalam.
The staff was very helpful and really helped us out to arrange trips and things that we needed in the rooms. The location is great. We had two rooms with very nice views over the sea. The rooms were clean and our A/C worked just fine! I really recommend this place!
What really was the best part was how helpful Arun and his staff was with arranging our different trips. Such nice people!
Absolutely the worst experience I've had the misfortune of having thus far.
Good View of the beach from one of their 'Sea View' Rooms
Very Spacious Rooms
Terrible Service/staff clueless about most stuff
Rooms not cleaned well at all
Toilet had roaches and was unclean
Aircons don't work very well
No Power backup
Very poor room amenities - Just one towel and a couple of glasses.. No Phone either
Getting there: I arrived early morning from Trivandrum and to be honest had a little difficulty finding the place at first, its nestled in between a couple of other resorts and there is very little in the way of signage. That said, there isn't much of a walk from where you would alight if you ask the taxi driver to take you to Lighthouse Beach. There isn't much of a resort here either. Just a lowly overpriced hotel.
Stay: Now this is where things took a turn for the worse. I booked a 'Deluxe Sea View' A/C Room. Upon Arriving, there was no one at the reception and I had to wait a while for someone to show up. I was then taken up to my room and my initial impression was that it was spacious and looked comfy. I then opened the balcony and found nothing but dust, sand, paint, and lot of dirt. That wasn't all - the TV was broken, the AC remote was not working (To which the attender just told me to "play around with the batteries and it will eventually work", lol), the toilet was smelly, no phone, and the bed was stiff.
They then moved me to a different room a couple of floors down. This was equally worse. Initially there was no TV, but that was fixed when the attender lifted a TV set from another room and placed it in mine. At least the balcony was (kinda) clean in this room. I thought I'll rest for a while, but then, the power goes off. There are frequent power cuts in Kerala, that's fine, but a hotel with NO POWER BACKUP whatsoever, ridiculous! I was left sweating for ~3 hours and each time I walked down to the reception to enquire (no phone, no elevator), they told me that all of Kovalam is having an outtage and I can check with the electricity board (lol again). Also, when I walked down to the reception, the railing on the stairs were greased and oily and there was no 'Do not touch' sign on it. I asked about it and they just said "Sir it's oil, wash it, it will go, don't worry" - Wow. Its only around nightfall that I realised that the hotel staff had been lying to me and there there is power everywhere, even in the reception, but not in my room! I then checked with them again and they told me, get this, even with the power so blatantly available everywhere, "Sir all of Kovalam is having a power outtage" Lol again. I then called the manager again and it turned out that there was a loose connection preventing power supply in my room. That was then fixed.
I then headed out and came back to the hotel at around 11PM and found the toilet to have a few roaches running around. When I lay down to sleep, I can smell vomit everywhere on the bed and it's obvious the hotel didn't clean up the mess as well as they should. I gave up at this point and just wanted this nightmare to end.
I told the hotel staff to give me a wake up call at 5:30 AM - which I thought meant either ringing the doorbell or calling me on my phone or something. Thankfully my alarm woke me up and at 6:20AM, I hear someone knocking on my door, gently, more like caressing the door. I opened to find the attender apologizing for being late and that he 'knocked' at least 5 times in the last 5 minutes before I opened. I just took a deep breath and was looking forward to getting out of there Asap.
There was no checkout procedure, they just grabbed the key and didn't even say bye. Courteous bunch they are.
Final Thought - There are much better hotels around for the money and I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. The view may be fantastic, but a lot of other hotels in the vicinity also offer the same, if not better views as they are all lined up along the beach. I remember looking into the neighbouring hotel's balcony and how clean it was and wondering why I didn't book that one, or any other hotel on the beach for that matter. Trust me, you'll feel the same if you book this one.
