This is the fourth time that we have stayed at this hotel. We had a room on the fourth floor, with a great view of the sea and sunsets. The room was large, well equipped and supported by great room service, including a very efficient laundry service.
We only used the restaurant for breakfast, but this was available to a good standard, with attentive and good service. Wifi was available, but was variable in strength. One slight disappointment was the lack of a courtesy room to use prior to being picked up and taken to the airport.
We spent two weeks at the Turtle on Beach on a Mercury package and this was our third stay in Kovalam. We arrived at around 4am and our check in was quick and efficient and our room was ready for us. We stayed in an ocean view room on the 4th floor and were really pleased that we paid the extra supplement for this room. The balcony was huge, fabulous view , large bedroom, comfortable bed and good bathroom. We had a few minor problems with the safe and air conditioning unit which were sorted out quickly and efficiently. The breakfast buffet was good with an excellent choice of South Indian breakfast dishes, dosas, idlis, fresh fruit as well as omelettes etc. The staff in the restaurant were particularly friendly and helpful. The lunchtime menu was good as was the buffet in the evening most nights, we were disappointed with lack of fish dishes. I would agree with other comments that the restaurant had no atmosphere at all and was strangely deserted most evenings. I would only stay on a bed and breakfast basis if I stayed here again as there are loads of places to eat locally with great seafood and that is part of the fun of being in Kovalam . The pool area could do with some refurbishment and the hotel definitely needs to replace the slightly tacky pool liner and repair the tiles. There were always plenty of staff in reception, everyone was friendly but it would be fair to say that they were not always very well informed and sometimes it took several goes to get our queries resolved. The internet connection was hopeless . I tried a massage in the 'spa'. The massage was ok but the surroundings were dingy and slightly grubby so I didn't repeat the experience. As a word of warning if you use the taxi drivers outside of the hotel make sure that you agree the price in advance, that are you are clear about what it does and does not include and that what you want to see is open!! I am tempted to name the taxi driver who took us the 2 1/2 hour journey to Kanyakumari as we particularly wanted to see the palace en route only to find it was was closed as it was a public holiday!!! Oh well next time! The walk to the beach takes about 10 minutes and is a steep climb back, we didn't mind this as we viewed it as a challenge and it helped work off a few calories. There are lovely beaches either side of the two main beaches in Kovalam , about 100 rupees in a tuktuk which are quieter , the one at Samudra is particularly nice with a couple of good restaurants behind which are great for a lunchtime snack. Overall I would say that this is a good mid range hotel to stay in, not the 5 stars that it publicises as it not in the same league as the Leela or Taj but we had a great holiday, enjoyed our stay there and would return without hesitation. One last tip is to try the Villa Maya restaurant in Trivandrum where you can eat in the courtyard of a beautifully restored villa, one of the top restaurants in India- not to be missed.
Visited this hotel for one night. I have to admit the rooms were amongst the most spacious I've stayed at. They were also very clean and well kept. The excellent views from the attached balcony is an added advantage.
The food at the coffee shop was lower than average and took extremely long to arrive. The breakfast buffet was disappointing.
A different set up and wonderful boutique type hotel in Kovalam. Great feel and nice stay. Lots to do around. Only drawback is no.private beach for the hotel guests. Otherwise....... there us a lot of scope for a wonderful vacation. Food and beverage is excellent with equally impeccable service. Kudos to the team.
- I made a booking on the day of arrival through the hotel website, and arrived at 2am: they did not recognise my booking or have a room ready, took until 4am before I finally got into a room.
- I had emailed the same day to request a transfer from airport and they did not reply
- They did not seem too willing to acknowledge this kind of service was not commensurate with the number of stars they award themselves / prices charged - more keen to make excuses than apologise. They started trying to say I had arrived "a day after I was supposed to", suggesting late arrivals aren't really something they can cope with.
- Had a "sea view" room apparently, but because of a large public veranda in between room and front of hotel, half the view was of trees and the rest was of construction sites next door.
- When I requested one of the "free transfers" to the beach the next day, the suggestion was that I walk instead.
Hotel is generally run down, and run by people who don't know how to provide a service: that would be fine at a third of the price perhaps. I suspect this would have been a good hotel in the past.
The hotel is "dry", which is fine if you know that; but similarly don't expect to pay high prices when it doesn't provide the services you might expect at that level.
Also, beware "On the beach" means on a hill, 10mins walk from the beach. Might as well stay at the Taj nearby which doesn't cost much more and provides all the service you might want / expect.
