Heritage and Hospitality - Hand in Glove! Heritage and Hospitality - Hand in Glove!

by amyvenks on February 19, 2017

I went to Kurseong with least expectations and no biased imagination of the place. Cochrane Place stoned me with its stark beauty of the preserved antiquity and the warm hospitality of the staff and the Hosts, Mr & Mrs Arora. The place is a value for money and offers unique ambiance of the British times. The Chai Country by itself looks beautiful with the tea blender's bar and the tandoor having a spout designed exterior. The restaurant chef is a cheerful enthusiastic person and comes up with very unique flavours and variety of cuisines. Anglo Indian food and Nepali dishes in addition to local dishes is his specialty. The Tea Blender Mr Laltu Purkhait is very passionate about his blends and flavours when it comes to the art of tea making. His goes on to explain the importance of the harvest and the liqueur that is used to make the tea. He offers a wide range of hot and cold teas and the tea menu by itself has round 30 or more varieties. There is a tea tasting session for a small fee for tea lovers, especially those who cannot resist fine blends. SOme of his unique flavours are Tandoori tea, Paan tea, Passion fruit ice tea, cucumber based ice tea, to name a few. Each flavour has a specific significance about when to be had and along with which kind of food. One can spend days together reading, writing or listening to music i this quaint boutique hotel. The friendly approach of each and every person on the property makes your stay very memorable. From the hotel on can do a toy train ride to Darjeeling and back, visit the Makaibari tea estate and the Ambotia tea gardens. The Shiva temple which is supposedly a swayambu, constructed in a monastery style is a very beautiful place. Dow hill which is claimed to be an haunted place looks beautiful and very inviting for small treks and hikes. All trips are organised along with a local guide and a private vehicle at hotel. one can enquire at the reception about the rates as per the season. Cochrane Place which originally belonged to Percy John Cochrane, retained his original name and its structure to day to stand out as 'The Place' to go to for any real tea lover.

Last December,2016 I stayed for one night. its my one of the lifetime experience .A heartiest welcome with best quality tea and cookies made me love at first sight. Room with neat and clean linens, warm hospitality, good quality foods especially a fantastic TEA BAR my ideas about no headache stay during tour. In one word it is awesome. If I shall decide to stay at Kurseong next time I must stay at this hotel.

Me and my wife Checked-in the Cochrane Place on the 26th Jan 2017 and check-out on the 29th. Every single day was worth remembering. We stayed at the deluxe room. The was enormous and had a very big verandah attached to it. The room had a colonial touch to it and was beautifully decorated. It came with a complimentary room heater as well. It was one of the best looking rooms I have stayed in. The staff were fantastic and very welcoming especially Ravi Raj. This guys is a real gem. He was always smiling and catering to all our wishes. Of course one must mention the famous Laltu Da as well. He made us tea cocktails one can only dream of. Do try the tea testing session. It is something i'll never forget. The location of the hotel is spectacular and has breathtaking view of th valley and Makaibari Tea estate. On the right you get the Makaibari tea estate and on the left you get the Castleton. Both at a walkable distance. Overall even if you stay there for more than a month it won't be enough. Definitely one of the most unique and best hotel experiences I've had in some time. Would definitely recommend it to anyone. Both thumbs up for this hotel!!!

We stoped over in Kurseong on our way to Darjeeling. We enjoyed the place very much, as it has a lot of character and brings you back to the good old times. The scenery is lovely and when you have time stop by the Tea Research Institute next door - where the scientists are keen to talk to you about soil- and plantsciene. The restaurant is excellent (recommend to pre-order your food) and the Tea-Sommelier will prepare you a special blend every time you order a fresh pot of tea! The Internet was a bit patchy, but 3G antenna is next door - so you will stay connected. Staff is extremely lovely and helpful and tailors you any trip around the area. Also the pick-up from Bagdogra worked out well.

Coming up from the Bengal place to refreshing Kurseong is a great experience, and this hotel makes a great end of a long day. Authentic heritage atmosphere, friendly people, good food, a beautiful mountain view garden, peaceful and green tea garden environment. I really enjoyed this place!
