Time travel back to the 60s! Time travel back to the 60s!

by yd_gli on August 2, 2016

I was here for one night in March of 2016. The moment you enter the gates of Fredrick you feel like one has gone back 50 years in time. I was in Mahabaleshwar on a weekend and all the hotels were running full. I took a chance at Frederick and the lady at the reception told me that they had ample rooms available. I should've taken this as an ominous sign and run for the exit right there but I made the mistake of giving it a shot and paid in advance while checking in. I got a room in the older wing which was not renovated. The room and its furniture was probably older than 50 years. Everything was covered in dust and the mattresses had moisture from the last few monsoons trapped in them. The bathrooms are a bad mashup of the Victorian and the modern age. The flush doesnt work half the time and the basin drips water all night. The hot water system is based on a wood fired boiler and I needed to plead multiple times with the lone caretaker to fire it up. He finally obliged and I got hot water an hour after I decided to have a bath. Fortunately, I was there in March with warm weather. God help you if you decide to go there in winter and need to run behind the caretaker in single digit temps for hot water. There is no room service and the room service bell does not work. One needs to walk all the way to the reception to order tea. Again, if you are there in the monsoon then you're in for a good time. The restaurant was non functional and the breakfast we got was something of an after thought. The omlette had only oil in it and the tea is best not spoken about. At 4-5k a night without food, this a sad excuse for a hotel. The service and rooms would be fine in the 1960s. But, to offer such a stay in the current times is a joke. The lady at the front desk behaves like she is doing you a favor by giving you a room to stay. May be she knows that Frederick is only choice for travelers when all other hotels are full and hence she can dictate terms. May be if she was more welcoming the hotel would run full even when others aren't because the location and views from here are far better than any other hotel. Avoid at all costs unless you are out of options and need to stay for a night. I was thankful that I didn't get a asthma or bronchitis attack from all that dust and mold in the room.

Amazing heritage themed hotel on the Mahabaleshwar Panchagani road. This is a jewel of a place in itself.Amazing spread out property with amazing views of the hills. The buffet served is exotic and sumptous. The best memory of this place is a couple of us sitting outside the room in the wee hours of the night and enjoying the calm and peace .It was chilly as it was July and rains had started, but this just meant that we were literally surrounded and engulfed by the clouds in the wee hours of the night. The moon was at the brightest which made the whole evening a Night to Remember.

Awesome panoramic view but poor service Awesome panoramic view but poor service

We stayed there for one night. Didn't have any plans to stay at Mahabaleshwar but a chance drive into this hotel made us change our plans & we opted to stay back for a day.View from the hotel is awesome. We stayed in AC room no. 9. Would strongly advise to go for Room no.4 with AC. That room has awesome view. Service- pathetic. Trick to manage it- tell them in advance that you'd like tea/coffee at so & so time. Had a 2 year old with me & asked for milk which was provided by them. Food- average with a fixed menu. Bathroom- HUGE, almost the size of one master bedroom. But tiles are plain white, old style & I slipped badly in the morning on some spilled water near the wash basin. They have kept 2 mats inside the bathroom but I guess I didn't realise the purpose. Rooms- again, HUGE. Some are renovated so you'd find them ok. Those which have not been renovated are damp but again, awesome views even from those rooms. Reception- had to wait for the owner to come. So if you are planning to go there late at night or very early in the morning, avoid it as everything will be closed. Staff- friendly but not proactive. Will do what you tell them to do. Every decision is controlled by the owner so I guess they fear her. For instance, we asked for the bedsheets to be changed so we were provided one. We asked for an extra & they came back with the reply that owner has said that already bed sheet has been provided. Bed sheets & bed covers- dirty. Beds- one queen size & another single. It was convenient as our child could sleep comfortably on the single bed. So if its 3 occupants of the same gender/with no frills about different genders staying together in same room or a couple with child, it'll be great value for money. One can park the car right in front of the room so its very convenient. No wifi, no intercom. Huge area in acres and one can feel oneness with nature in the morning. Thats why a one time stay can be managed!

Great Hotel. Shabby experience. Great Hotel. Shabby experience.

The place is very close to the Market and yet eclectic in it's serenity. The construction is reminiscent of the British times probably. There is greens all around, flowers adding up to the glory of the garden, spacious rooms, patio furniture, ample space, a superb view of the valley and even a glimpse of the Venna lake. Sadly, the maintenance of the place is questionable at best. The rooms are worse for wear, the gardens could be better groomed, the ceilings could be stain free. And then, the bedding could do without the stale stench. And the attending staff could be a little more prompt. It felt as if the whole place was being operated by the Managing lady single-handedly. There was a lot to be desired in the name of good service and cleanliness. Notwithstanding, a good time surrounded by nature is something the place certainly offers. We had a memorable trip.

We have been to Fredrick's, Mahabaleshwar, many times. But this time it was special coz my daughter had fractured her ankle and consequently we had to cancel our trip to Sikkim and Darjeeling. We chose Mahabaleshwar as its one flight distance away from Nagpur. Fredrick's has maintained its old world charm by not interfering too much with the colonial building with its high roof, big rooms which can accommodate 4 to 5 persons easily. All on ground floor. A verandah, with a view of the lake, breathtaking! Surrounded by a garden with big trees and chirping birds. Madam D'Souza who owns and manages the resort is very helpful and considerate. Supporting staff though less in no is very good. Food served in various courses is superb. I recommend Fredrick's Mahabaleshwar to everyone who likes a peaceful vacation in the cool climes.
