I arrived at Murugan guest house because I hadn't booked anything before my arrival. Murugan is ideally located, close to the bus stand, beach and restaurant. I paid 600 roupies for the room. The room is quite big, quite clean. The bathroom is not bad except the shower was not working for hot water. But you can wash yourself with the bucket. I liked the place for this price except the sheets which were clean but made of an unpleasant material.
we stayed on 16.12.13 night, very worst service and amenities. we didnt get water in toilets until morning 6.30 am. very worst. dont plan to stay here.we very much irritated. waste of money and waste of time.
We arrived late at night having been met at Chennai by a driver who worked for the hotel. To be honest before we arrived we were grateful to have found anywhere to stay in Mamalapuram as everything seemed booked up over New Year. We had specified to the guy we spoke to that we wanted a room with two single beds.so were naturally not impressed to be shown to a room with one small double bed. Not only that but the room was sterile, souless and uncomfortable - more like a prison cell. There was no attempt to find us another more suitable room and the staff member was rude and unhelpful. I would leave this to be your very last resort. Unfortunately most of the accomodation in Mamallapuram is a bit ropey unless you are prepared to pay a lot and book well in advance.
I chose to stay here because other reviewers had said that power cuts in Mamallapuram are frequent and of long durations, which is very much the case (sometimes up to 6hrs), and that this place was very good at turning on their generator when power cuts occurred, which was not the case at all. In defence of the other reviewers I have to say that I was told locally that the management had recently changed for this place so I don't know if this is why my experience was so different from everyone else's. Basically, my room was on the ground floor facing the street, right next to the open sewer (it was 42 degrees Celsius at the time of my stay), had not been cleaned and had a hole big enough in the bathroom wall that various vermin and insects would come in at night. Add to this the fact that the electricity was out for most of the time I was there and you've REALLY got your 700 Rupees worth of money! As the title says, the only saving grace of this place was that it had decent cable which allowed me to bridge some of the swelteringly hot afternoons I spent here and enabled me to "pretend" to not hear the persistent knocking on my door from the numerous creepy guys that worked here. By far my worst India-experience as of yet.
I had stayed at a place called Hotel Ramakrishna in Mamallapuram. But after one night at the Ramakrishna, I moved one-half block down the street to the "Sri Murugan Guest House" where, for the same 1,000 rupees (single with AC), I found a much nicer room (with top-sheet and a toilet seat, two things missing at the Ramakrishna), air conditioning that worked very well, and a back-up electricity generator that kicked-in immediately when the Tamil Nadu electric grid failed (which it does, VERY frequently, and for long periods of time). Sri Murugan did not give me a free breakfast for my 1,000 rupees, but no-breakfast was almost better than the one supplied by Ramakrishna. I cannot stress enough that having a back-up electricity generator (that kicks-in automatically and immediately when the power grid fails) is VERY important in Tamil Nadu. Why pay for AC and a television, etc., if you can't use them ? ? ? I had asked the Ramakrishna if they had a back-up generator (they had said, "Yes"), but I forgot to ask them if they turn it on when the power grid goes off. My experience with Ramakrishna was that, frequently, they do NOT turn it on; and IF they turn it on, it certainly doesn't happen automatically or immediately. At Sri Murugan, however, the power interuptions were very very short, 24/7. To summarize: in Mallapuram, I give a big "thumbs down" to Ramakrishna Lodge, whereas I was reasonably pleased with the Sri Murugan 25 meters away.
