We've been traveling throughout Asia for more than 15 years in various countries. So we know that things are not always up to western standards in Asia and understand one cannot expect a 5 star hotel service at a home stay. But green Shades just doesn't deliver the facilities and holiday atmosphere it advertises.
The only thing well maintained the the owners house and his garden, where you as a guest cannot sit but only walk through on your way to your room in the back. Under the stairs leading to our room lied a enormous pile of empty plastic bottles and other garbage.
The Deluxe Room with balcony, was everything but deluxe. It has a double bed plus a steel closet for one person, like a locker they use in the military. And yes a flatscreen tv, and that's it. No chair to sit on. No water heater to make some tea for instance. No mini fridge.(useful things, since you are 45 min drive from the town of Mannur). Bathroom math was filthy. Mold on the whole ceiling and on the walls of the bathroom.
Of course it's difficult to avoid mold in a damp environment high up in the mountains, but this is simple a case of no maintenance whatsoever.
The balcony is poor maintained swell, offering only 2 dirty plastic chairs and table. About the view you can differ, it's basicaly a wall of trees you are looking at.
Restaurant? Do they mean the room of 2.5 by 3 meters with one table and 5 chairs,
where we had dinner and breakfast? And you have to decide at breakfast (with a rusty toaster) what you want to eat for dinner, with a choice of 2 options. Maybe someone should explain the owner what the word 'restaurant' implies.
There is also not an option to relax at the homestay, and order a drink or anything.
Not even a vending machine.
Free High Speed Internet? Extreme Slow Internet is a better discription. First there wasn't even wifi at all. And the manager Sandor, who really tried to do his best to give a feel of hospitality, could only say: 'boss not here, tonight I will tell boss.'
Finally when WiFi worked, it hardly worked and if it did it was extremely slow.
For all the other facilities I can only agree with the reviews of Simon S. from London and AyaNasNat from Bangaluru. So I do not have to repeat it here.
In all, poor value for this price range.
I don't know what happened, at the time we booked this place review were good, but since September 2017 more and more bad reviews appear. Maybe there is a new owner.
The boss/owner has a shop in Munnar town, and probably sees this homestay as a side business, but clearly not as a priority.
We booked our two-night stay at Green Shades through booking.com, where the listing promised:
"The centralised kitchen offers food on request via room service.Green Shades operates a 24-hour front desk. Guests can make travel arrangements at the tour desk, or get assistance with luggage storage, laundry and ironing services."
However, upon arrival, we discovered that there was no kitchen or food, no 'tour desk' and no assistance with laundry and ironing services. All of these services we felt were essential, seeing that the hotel was in a rather remote location, and therefore such facilities were a major factor in our reason for choosing Green Shades.
On top of this, the person who greeted us and showed us to our room upon arrival said he didn't work there and was only helping out, a statement that minutes later was contradicted by another 'employee' who told us the first person was in fact the manager!
We decided to leave immediately. On emailing the hotel to confirm our cancellation and ensure that we will not be charged, a character named Rishy replied (who, according to the 'manager', was based somewhere in Tamil Nadu), who apologised and said that they'd had a recent staff change over, which was the explanation for our experience!
Avoid at all costs: there are plenty of genuine alternatives nearby.
I happen to visit Green shades , Munnar and a horrible experience vis a vis what they claim on their web site and brochure . No restaurant , no kettle , no mini Fridge , no view . The photos they show is their beautiful house . I checked and walked out in 1 HR .
Though Green Shades is several kilometers away from Munnar, it is a beautiful "tree house" in a gorgeous, quiet, wonderful forest. The manager was sensational, helpful, pleasant, and kind, as he did everything around the place except the cooking. In addition to serving our breakfast, answering questions, cleaning our room, and taking care of everything around the place, he stood out on the highway with us twice, as we waited to catch buses, one to Munnar and another back to Cochin.
Great place, lovely food, different breakfast every day, great dinners. Hotel manager was very helpful and organised trips and rickshaws / cars whenever we needed one. Hotel outside of Munnar with a really lovely garden next to a Spice Garden where we had a delightful tour with a really knowledgeable guide. Well worth a visit.
