2 nights in Rose Gardens 2 nights in Rose Gardens

by jeanjacqueskupiec on November 19, 2016

My wife and I stayed two nights in Rose Gardens last October. That was our best experience in India. The room was comfortable. The food was excellent and our hosts were very friendly. We recommend it as a must if you intend to visit Munnar.

Excellent choice for Munnar Excellent choice for Munnar

India Someday booked this homestay for 3 nights at the end of August for my husband and I and we couldn't be happier with the choice. We arrived at about 3:30 pm in the afternoon on a dark and rainy day but amused ourselves by relaxing and watching the storms. Our balcony looked out over the garden. The room was spacious and clean. The family all speak excellent English and take great price in their place. The place was a little expensive compared to some of the others we stayed at in India but it certainly appears that Munnar is a fairly small town that attracts an enormous number of tourists so no doubt prices are higher here than in other places. We really enjoyed the fact that we could drink the delicious tap water - filtered water from the mountain streams. The WIFI was about the best we encountered in India. We enjoyed very much the walk around the garden and learning about all the environmentally friendly features of the property. The food was plentiful and delicious. I don't eat meat but the meat dishes might be a plus for other guests. At first it was hard to get used to Tomy and Dileep running around serving us non stop but then after encountering the same service at a locals restaurant in town I realized that this is just the custom here. The food continues to come until you firmly say no. As well as talking to the family it was enjoyable meeting the other guests over dinner and sharing experiences in the evening when there wasn't much else going on. The location outside of Munnar didn't bother me - you pretty well have to use a driver anyways to get anywhere and the location of Rose Gardens is so much more pleasant than town. The house is on the main road and the first few hours the continuous honking was a little bothersome but after that I must have gotten used to it as I don't remember hearing it. It was a lot quieter at night although this was still not the quietest place we stayed at.

Tranquility and rejuvenation away from the bustle of urban India Tranquility and rejuvenation away from the bustle of urban India

I visited the Rose Gardens Homestay in early November for 4 nights. It was my fifth and, ultimately, my final stop on a self-guided journey through the southern quarter of the Indian subcontinent. And it was likely my favorite leg of the trip. I arrived at the Homestay with a terrible bout of traveler's sickness (thanks to my uninhibited enjoyment of Madurai's street food), and Tomy + family knew exactly what I needed--a comfy bed, delicious chai, and the calming atmosphere of their home. After 36 hours of resting among the aromatic gardens and listening to the symphony of birds in the backyard, I was back to 100% health. Oh, and Tomy's wife's INCREDIBLE cooking didn't hurt either! :) Okay, so for the full overview! The Homestay is located about 30-35 minutes drive from the center of Munnar, which is pretty much perfect. It's close enough that you don't feel discouraged from heading in to do some shopping, explore the area, or grab some lunch, but it's far enough that you feel quite removed from the hustle and bustle. While the Homestay is right next to a main road, it feels like a remote jungle escape. There's a small highway restaurant/cafe about 4 minutes walk up the road with the best view (esp at sunrise/sunset)--as well as a scrumptious masala chai--I encountered in all of India. The Homestay itself is a split-level house with about 4 (?) guest rooms. I stayed upstairs with a balcony and view of the garden... It was absolutely splendid to wake up with tons of natural light and the melange of chirping. The room itself was very comfortable, with two double beds and a large bathroom complete with all the essential amenities. Tomy runs his Homestay very much like a bed and breakfast, serving complimentary breakfasts and optional dinners for a small additional fee. And you better take him up on it! His wife (Raji?) is one of the best home cooks I've ever had the pleasure of dining with. She made the most energizing and delicious breakfasts each morning, but the real stars were her dinners, huge meals complete with 3, sometimes 4 curries, fresh chapatis, and perfectly cooked rice. The meals I had at Rose Gardens were easily the best I had in all of India. Outside of the Homestay, the area around Munnar offers a ton of beautiful vistas and opportunities for exploration. Tomy's son, Dileep, recommended a long trek to me and another guest. It took us through tea and cardamom plantations, through rolling hills and old-world-style hamlets along winding streams. The total trek took about 5 hours of continuous walking, but it felt shorter! Just be sure to grab some sunscreen, as the mid-day sun can be deceptively strong! I also rented a bike and explored a bit further to the south... If you're feeling adventurous, I'd highly recommend biking down to the Idukki dam--the view is simply stunning! Overall, I can't recommend the Rose Gardens Homestay enough. For solo travelers and couples looking for a retreat from the bustle of urban India to families seeking a home-away-from-home, Tomy's family has created the PERFECT getaway spot with all of the comforts and pleasures of a 5-star hotel. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Truly a family homestay! We were made to feel welcome by all the family members. The home is tucked away in a beautiful, idyllic, quiet garden setting. Tomy is very environmentally oriented and oversees the gardens & farmland. Rajee's delicious meals are 'from garden to table'. Helpings are plentiful... you will never leave the table hungry! Dileep, the oldest son is engaging, knowledgeable and helpful. He was the best tour guide, explaining the history of the area and his family's connection to the land. Deepu, the youngest son, is a delightful, energetic 13 year old who helps out after school and enjoys interacting with the guests. Really, a lovely family and great place to stay! We stayed at at the Rose Garden Homestay for 3 nights. The rooms were spacious and more then comfortable . Mrs. Raji Joseph's home-cooked local dishes were delicious. The entire Joseph family is very warm and hospitable. We got the grand tour of the beautiful garden by Tomy. Great seeing at the table with other travelers and sharing stories. Thank you to the whole Joseph family .
