Worth a visit, but needs some improvement Worth a visit, but needs some improvement

by Adven_Tourister on January 17, 2017

I stayed here on the 8th of January for a day. The location of the property is very good and I would say it is worth a visit just for the experience considering the heritage and the history associated with it. I stayed in Oldenburg (each rooms have names) which is on the ground floor of the main bungalow. The balcony is towards the beach but the property fence is high, so you cannot see the beach while in the balcony. The room was big and everything had a heritage feeling to it. However, I could feel the mold odour and ended up having an allergy. I think Neemrana needs to look at maintaining the roof (made of wood) and it probably is rotting. Coming to the food - this is where I was disappointed. The quality and quantity of the food server was not upto the mark. They definitely need to revisit their recipes and also the menu. Overall if your looking for a heritage experience, some quiet time, relaxation I would recommend staying for a day and not more than that. Laze around the pool in the day and relax by the balcony in the evening/night.

Old world charm Old world charm

The hotel is right on the beach and across from the Danish fort. The building which houses the hotel is a former governors bungalow and is around 300 years old.The place has been renovated tastefully and has about 8 rooms. The three rooms facing the sea on the first floor are the best though all rooms are good. All rooms are large with high ceilings and old furniture.Toilets are spacious and modern considering the age of the building. Some of the rooms do smell musty though and there is a fair amount of seepage that needs to be attended to. Loved the balcony running around the first floor and ground floor with tables and chair scattered around it. Very elegant place which can be improved on though. The staff are all local and very helpful and pleasant. Food at the restaurant is good and fairly priced considering the fact that there is nothing else within walking distance. Breakfast was sumptuous and you can order from the menu as well. A good place to spend about a couple of days to unwind or visit the numerous temples nearby. The pool is pretty good though the gardens are ill maintained. Would surely recommend.

Started on a terrible note Started on a terrible note

I had visited Tranquebar on 7th and 8th Jan 2017. The booking was confirmed by the booking office staff Piyasha Auddy. Once I reached the place, I was informed that the booking was made for 7th and 8th December 2017 and currently no rooms are available. Needless to say that I was shocked since I had clearly mentioned and even discussed twice about availability of the room for 7th Jan. 2017. I also questioned that manager that 'how on earth can someone request booking nearly year ahead. Luckily enough there was a room available in their other property The Gate House' where we were put up. The difference in cost was nearly 2500 Rs. We did try to compensate by having meals at the restaurant. The staff were very polite, courteous and helpful. As for food, Tharangambadi fish curry was good and chocolate mousse with rum was awesome. The sea food platter at Rs 650 was let down with just few prawns and squids. Breakfast buffet is quite limited compared to 5 star hotels. The place has an old age charm and very relaxing. I still have balance of 800Rs which hopefully will be refunded.

We aren't talking 5 star by any means, but that is the compelling charm of this place. A sleepy old heritage property, which has been lovingly nurtured with no pretention or lack of taste. It's sleepy and faded and sweet. Our room was massive and on the 1st floor (The Crown Prince of Denmark room) - our door opened onto a high-ceilinged lobby painted in beautiful faded cerulean blue with a distinguished brass chandelier suspended from its ceiling. The sea air hurtles across the building and you feel instantly relaxed. The food was quite delicious - our "Creole" shrimp curry was a pleasant surprise - and very reasonably priced. I'm not sure that Tranquebar is on everyone's Tamil Nadu route - but it should be - and they should stay here. We could easily have spent a bit more time here - just lazing and walking along the seaside and reading and eating home-cooked food.

Peaceful boutique hotel on the beach Peaceful boutique hotel on the beach

After our terrible experience at Neemarana's Hotel de L' Orient in Pondicherry( see review), we were very apprehensive of our next stop at their Bungalow on the Beach in Tranquebar. We were delighted to find that this was so much better. The hotel is excellently located right on the beach, next to the old Governor's House. Since Tranquebar is a very small place, all the sights are within walking distance and just across from the Dansborg fort. As with all Neemrana properties it's a restored heritage building, formerly the British Collector's residence in 1845, well maintained. As a contrast, the Governor's House which was restored just 4 years ago as a government -run hotel has again fallen into disrepair and is not longer operational. There is a nice swimming pool( which we did not use). We stayed in the Prince of Denmark room on the first floor. Our room opened onto a deep verandah that runs around the building. The room was well furnished, and clean, the bathroom small but also clean and functional. Our receptionist was polite and informative. Coffee ordered on arrival came promptly to our room. The lunch and dinner menus are a little bit limited but well prepared- we had fish since it's fresh and we are on the sea! Unfortunately, there is no bar licence, so BYOB.The only other caveat is that the wifi did not work in most places. We stayed just the night on our way to Thanjavur and would recommend this for a n overnight stop, or as a restful place to relax for a few days.
