a certain charm to the rooms, with lots of Indian statuary, but basic to disgusting bathrooms. Mildew and water splashes all over the place when trying to take a shower. Hapless owner, who doesnt think to indicate where the hot water switch is, putting the wifi password clearly in the rooms, no hair dryers in rooms, cigarette-smoking all over the place, a TV on in the public areas which staff watches. Very down-market. Nowhere to out yout suitcase but the floor, and the owner doesnt think about it or give a damn. Depressing. For backpackers and those on a very small budget and dont care about polished service, cleanliness, cigarette smoke, lack of luggage racks, enough hangers - an air of who-cares.
PEACEFUL REAL HERITAGE FEELING
by SumanT157 on
Let me first tell you that Romain Rolland st is extremely well maintained area of Pondicherry. Its really looks like french colony. One must stay at this colony only.
Coloniale heritage ( 5 mins walking distance from Promenade beach) is truly heritage building. The atmosphere is an extremely peaceful.
1) Beautiful heritage building
2) Total 5 rooms , ground 2 , first floor 2 and 2nd floor 1 room for guests. But one must stay in 1st floor room without fail, preferably the room which has swing.
3) Neat and Clean
1) Breakfast is monotonous

The first word which came in my mind , when I entered is "WOW'.
Its a french bungalow converted into home style accommodation.Pretty place surrounded with lush green plantation, vintage antique's and colourful interiors. Our room was pretty huge, clean and clean . the staff here is also very sweet and understanding, plus it offers accommodation at a very reasonable rate. It's is in White Town and 2 min walk from promenade.

My primary focus for my Pondicherry trip was to experience French colonial charm. So I was looking for a hotel in White Town, with the typical look of a Pondicherry house. There were many. All looked fabulous in their yellow or grey paint with white borders and wooden windows and arched gateways. As I was traveling alone in a lower budget, I couldnt afford my first choice. Or second or third for that matter. After a lot of search I found this place fitting to my requirement for a tariff of 2,000 per night (varies based on the type of room). At that point I was a little upset since it wasnt my first choice. But after reaching there, I found the place perfect for my need.
Its basically a personal residence turned into a hotel/homestay. So the owner lives in the same place. Its quite big for a personal house, during my stay I hardly had to cross path with other occupants. The place is located right next to Gratitude Heritage and a few steps away from Neemranas. The rock beach is within half a kilometre and there are 20 to 30 restaurants in the vicinity. From outside, it looks like a small place with a wooden door on an orange frame. The white boundary wall is partially hidden under the overflowing plant with purple flowers. Inside the boundary, the path goes straight towards the main building keeping a small garden on your left and the boundary wall on right. A veranda area has been converted to dining hall and is decorated with artefacts and books. A staircase goes upward from there, probably to other rooms. For my room I had to go through a passage on the right which led to an open area with a porch at the end. A door on the left of this area led to my room.
The room was cozy with a vintage charm. All furniture were wooden - bed, cupboard, study table & chair and a small sofa. The bathroom was spacious with a window opening to the front yard. The colorful glasses above the door and window along with the red mosquito net made the room look very pretty. It was definitely better than my expectation and perfect for experiencing Pondicherry given the fact that its an actual French colony house. I strongly recommend this place to people who are looking for similar experience.

Staff and the owner Sabine are very cooperative we were travelling with infant and they helped us cook for baby.. They were so kind and helpful.. The place has lot of positivity and is just 250m from beach.. Awesome experience in this nest.. Loved it.
