Don't be put off by the name, ability to speak French not required. The very helpful gentleman who greeted us at reception with flowers and a tasty lime and ginger speaks good English. He also took our orders and advised on selection at dinner and breakfast, I did wonder if service would still be as good if he ever gets a break. The food was of a very high standard and cooked to order, I particularly recommend the South Indian special at breakfast. Its all built into a traditional house in the centre of town so lots of character and the inevitable compromises that brings. I wished we had been staying longer than the single night on our tour of the south.
We spent two nights in Maison Perumal.. It is an Heritage house which has been converted into an hotel. The building has two courtyards inter connected. . One courtyard has a lovely butterfly garden. Second courtyard is kept for evening entertainment and activities. The walls are full of pictures of people of olden times who lived here. We get to see the types of clothes they wore, Food was very homely, and so was the service. We felt very much at ease in this atmosphere. .
I stayed here for 2 nights in Room 10, a very large, lovely room with both AC & fans, a sitting room, bedroom with carved wood furniture & nice linens, nice shower with stone floor, beautiful polished red floors, and a giant brass room key. (One of my traveling companions complained about noise in her room in the morning, but being a sound sleeper, I didn't hear anything.) The hotel is small and built around 2 courtyards. The staff is friendly, efficient and attentive. Check-in was fast, after a warm welcome of a cool lime drink and a flower garland. The hotel offered a very interesting cooking demonstration each night, with the chef explaining the ingredients and cooking a small meal so each of us could have a taste. (He makes it look so easy!) We had breakfast & dinner here each day, and it was always excellent. Even if you don't stay here, the restaurant here is worth a visit. Really delicious food - I highly recommend the fish with coriander & prawns with cinnamon. Delicious!
It is in Perumal Koil Street, near Market. Very good location, in city centre. Very popular and tourist like it. It has lot of activities. Very old residential place converted to Heritage Hotel. You can feel you are in few centuries back, enjoyable.
We stayed here for one night and the staff and food were excellent. They were very welcoming and the communal area is relaxing and calm. It is a hotel which has been beautifully restored. The main problem we had was that our room, number 9 was very noisy at night. We were not sure whether it was the extractor fans from the kitchen, which have been mentioned in other reviews or what it was. But it rather detracted from the enjoyment of our stay.
