We had been staying at this resort for many years, ever since we became members. In the beginning they had a very nice ambience, cool green lawns, a nice swimming pool with a water slide, a good restaurant, boating facilities in a nearby stream, gym, indoor games, indoor badminton court and a tennis court. It was an excellent weekend getaway for the whole family, and so close to our home city, Pune. We would stay at the resort 5 nights every year. We felt as if we had been transported far away from the noisy city and were surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery. We would be woken up by bird calls, in time to witness a golden sunrise. Evening walks into the surrounding countryside was also a pleasant experience. We did not need to plan a long vacation to a faraway destination, thanks to Ganga Retreat Countryside. But I was in for a rude shock during my last visit. More than 75% of the open grounds have been given over to the commercial cultural venture called Chokhi Dhani. Rajasthani folk singers and artistes start sounding their drums and instruments soon after 5 pm, disturbing the peace and harmony of the natural surroundings. The swimming pool has been bone dry for the last year and half. The restaurant was closed. It starts functioning only when it has been hired by a marriage party or a corporate function. In fact this is what Ganga Retreat Countryside has become now. It is rented out as a venue for conferences and wedding functions, better known as a Mangal Karyalaya. Overnight stay is arranged in the rooms available for overnight visitors from the wedding functions or from Chokhi Dhani. I felt sad that we would not be able to enjoy our weekend getaways at this resort as we used to earlier, due to it becoming a noisy commercialised venture as it is now.
