This Hotel is a heritage property and has maintained there grandeur . staff is extremely helpful and polite. This hotel is situated approximately 3-4 Kms from Jagannath Temple and is about 300mts from Puri Beach. This beach is secluded and won't see many people around. Since Beach is secluded its good for walk but bathing is a risk since no lifeguard are available. Since this is away from temple, each to and fro will cost around 200rs in auto. So as far location is concerned its not in middle of the town. Even there are no good eateries around and you will have to depend on hotel staff. Now as far Hotel is concerned its absolutely beautiful heritage property nicely kept.Rooms and Bath rooms are huge, stairs and floors are wooden. They also have a small pool. There food cannot be said great, and service is extremely slow. Being in Puri we would like to taste Sweets of Odisha, food of Odisha but you wont find much of Odisha food in there menu. BNR team could definitely do much better in cleanliness department around hotel which is lacking. Overall I have rated very good because of the grandeur and polite staff.
Beautiful building and grounds. Polite staff. Lovely big rooms with tired decor. The food is poor. The service is too slow! All spells that the management is in dire need of improvement! There is no view as a new Railway Hotel is opposite. It is a walk to the sea. Suggest spend 1 night and move elsewhere like the Mayfair.
Situated around 200 metres from Puri sea beach, the Chanakya BNR Hotel serves as a great place to dine, relax and enjoy the lip smacking delicacies. This hotel is one of the famous Railway Heritage hotels, which boasts of old world charm along with all modern day amenities. It houses an old engine at the entrance, with a rare collection of photographs in the restaurant and corridors, which tells the tale of the evolution of Railways from the British era. Well maintained corridors with a beautifully decorated garden makes the dining experience even more exciting.
The USP of this place is the famous Chicken Roast Sizzler, which is served with veggies and sizzler sauce. Other dishes to try would be Galouti Kabab, Jhinga Lasooni, etc. Don't forget to taste the Caramel Pudding.
We stayed at historic BNR hotel for a night in December end. A sprawling property, good location (though no sea view or beach access), large rooms, high ceiling, long grand corridor, nice pictures on the wall whispering history of Indian railways and its colonial past. It all looked very promising and inspiring. Check in was fast when we arrived in the evening. We stayed at room 16 on the upper floor, the room named after the nizam and his guaranteed Hyderabad railway (we were driving down from Hyderabad, but thats just coincidence). Wooden floor, clean sheets, not too soft mattress, ample storage, high ceiling, large space, all the right boxes checked for comfort.
Then it hits. Bathroom had a smell, it never went away even after keeping the exhaust on for hours, shower was semi broken, shower curtain had stains, toiletries were most basic, but towels were clean. Wall near the bathroom was damp (has efflorescence). We had dinner outside, so cannot comment on that. When it was time for bed, we discovered the blanket to be dirty with bad stains, and not useable. It was late, and our confidence was low, so we put on some woollens and slept without blanket.
Their checkout time is 8 in the morning. This works perfectly for us as we wanted to head home early morning. When a hotel has early checkout, you would also expect an early breakfast, right ? Wrong. We were ready by 6 am. Had a nice stroll on the large property, my son thrilled with the railway engine kept in the garden, we let them know our intent to have breakfast and head out, but nothing. Finally breakfast started at 8 AM. We hurried with the food and checked out at 8:30 (we rushed ourselves, the staff were pretty relaxed and never took the checkout time seriously). Breakfast spread was average, not great, but not very basic either.
The property is heritage quality and almost a palace but is not well maintained and cleanliness and speed of response of room service leaves a lot to be desired ! The hot water facility for bathing also does not work and warm water stops within 5 mins !! However the rooms are big and the property huge and good to stroll around in......also centrally located !!
