Location was not good we had a problem in traveling to go any where in the market you have to hire a car which was a big problem. Otherwise, we had a continental food it was very delicious and well served. Room was large and very clean. Staff was well trained and service was quick. Its highly recommendable to others.

A heritage property which needs urgent attention A heritage property which needs urgent attention

by Suprotik B on October 23, 2016

The resort is good and comfortable but needs refurbishment urgently. The food offered is decent, the rooms are ok but need attention. Water supply at our room ( the hot water) was erratic. The staff try their best to make you feel comfortable but I guess they are in need of more trained manpower. The restaurant had an old world charm and the ambience was good. We had very comfortable stay and look forward to visit this place again. Request Mr Rajesh and Team to think on the refurbishment and wish them the very best.

This is a heritage property - made out of an old hunting lodge. The actual heritage lodge has two suites and rest is reserved for ITC. Take time to visit the lodge and ask Mr rajesh - the manager to show around. He has been involved in the renovation and will happily show around. Your stay in the normal rooms. Rooms are large and spacious, face the hills and prefer the ones on the higher floors towards the side for a better view. Food is good and the breakfast is not elaborate but decent. I would recommend trying their local dishes if you are not from Kumaon. The spa is nice but do not expect a 5 star. On special occasions they arrange a DJ and bonfires. On the Independence Day they organised a ghazal night. The best place is the "maharaja of sheikhupura" room - an old English style wooden bar. Do take time to spend a quiet time with yourself with a book or a beer. This place is not cheap, neither expensive and among the best places to stay in Ranikhet. It's close to the Golf Green. I would come back if I run out of new places to visit.

Mesmerizing Experience Mesmerizing Experience

A heritage property like Windsor Lodge is a out of world experience for history lovers. The view from the main lodge is amazing. Food was delicious and the staff was very helpful. You will find old style large bathrooms (as big as rooms) with all basic amenities. It is located in a peaceful area and its a perfect getaway.

Great Property but desperately needs refurbishing. Great Property but desperately needs refurbishing.

This Hotel is a Welcome Heritage property so everyone arrives here with great expectations, as did I on 12th August 2016. To a certain extent the property meets those expectations while on some others it is a big letdown. Lets look at the positives first. 1. If you get one of the rooms which has a balcony the view you get from the place is phenomenal and soul nourishing. 2. It is amazingly silent and quiet (as long as the occupancy in the hotel is low). If this feature attracts you then make sure that you dont visit in the peak season time or during long weekends. 3. The staff tries there level best and go out of their way to make you comfortable and meet your requests and demands. 4. It is in a secluded location near the Golf course and you can if you wish to, go for long walks without encountering much traffic. 5. For those keen on Pool / Billiards there is a newly renovated table available. 6. Food is by and large excellent. Shifting our attention to the negatives I would enlist as under 1. It is a heritage property and has those high ceilings, old wooden almirahs, crevices etc. While this is a great plus as far as looks and feel of the place are concerned it is a housekeeping staff nightmare. Particularly during rainy season (which is when I was there) when the insect population explodes. There are spider webs and some very large sized spiders around. 2. The housekeeping staffs of the property are limited and should be increased to take care of this issue. As it is not just the high ceilings but the normal bathroom also that has been invaded by these creatures and regular fumigation particularly after check out can greatly decrease the incidence of this problem. 3. The property in general and the rooms in particular are in desperate need for refurbishment. There are a number of things that have a jaded look. The bathroom curtains in particular. 4. The light in the bathroom is insufficient, more lights must be added. 5. The lights in the room a number of bulbs were either fused or the points dysfunctional. They need to be replaced. 6. On day one we got Towels that were very worn out and tired, thankfully the very next day a new lot of towels for the entire property arrived. Bottom line Once refurbished I would love to return. Warning Dont leave your door or window open, monkeys are quick to cash in on such an opportunity. Do not walk out of the property at night this is Leopard territory.

WINDSOR LODGE,RANIKHET WINDSOR LODGE,RANIKHET

by Renu8 on August 6, 2016

Is located in the cantonment hill station town of Ranikhet, in Almora district of Uttarakhand. It was built as a charming colonial style hunting lodge, in 1909, due to the thick forests which abounded with wild life. It resembles a typical double story wood and stone English country house .Perched on a hillock, with forests of oak and pine, and, of spectacular views, of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, such as the Nanda Devi and Trishul, amongst the more popular ones. The heaven touching apex peaks were sprinkled and swaddled with necklaces of the omnipresent powdery snow. How ever, a devastating fire destroyed it in 1948, and it remained as a neglected ruin, for about 50 years. Restoration work started in 1999, with great care to retain its original colonial architecture. Built using local material, such as timber and rough hewed stone, sourced from the surrounding area, on various levels, the lodge, is set within 10 acres .It was beautifully landscaped with fruit trees, including apple ,apricot, peach, pear and plum. The 30 luxurious rooms are located in the various buildings. The Moti Mahal Block, built in the 1920s has rooms consisting of Deluxe, Superior Deluxe and Deluxe Suites. The Pine Valley Block has 12 rooms, all of which fall in the Superior Deluxe Category. Large, with wooden floor boards, wooden rafters, a fire place, period furniture, en- suite bathrooms, tea and coffee makers and the modern aberration of a television set. But, best of all! All balconies, overlook the woods .As we stood there, we watched, as the mist wrapped nature, by using its spineless tenticles to trail around everything. It clung to and enrobed everything it could. Nothing was spared. The wind tore through the woods, hills and valleys, sounding like a waterfall in full spate. This was followed by rainfall, which reduced the temperature further. The sound of the wind now changed. It seemed to be whistling and whining through the dangerously swaying coniferous trees. Only the wind in the hills can produce such awesome sounds! What the rain did, how ever, was, to clear the atmosphere. The twinkling lights of the hamlets, dotting the hillside, which had not been visible the night before, now pierced through the velvety darkness of the silent night. Also included in the estate, are 4 fully furnished and equipped self catering apartments, comprising Rose Cottage. The plush Windsor Suite, has a semi circular balcony running around it, giving one uninterrupted views of the grandiose Himalayas. Similarly, the Robinson Suite, can boast of the same spell binding views. The Kumaon Room, is the all purpose restaurant , offering tasty and well prepared Indian and Continental cuisines for all the meals. The Conservatory, has a healthy vine, growing across the inside of the glass roof, supporting numerous bunches of unripe green grapes, waiting to turn a luscious black, in a month or two. Kafal Bagh, with its wrought iron furniture with garden umbrellas, is your place for wiling away time as you listen to the call of birds, finish that half read long forgotten book, or revel in the novelty of basking in the sun. Raja of Sheikhupura, so named after the very same person, is a cozy and charming room, to sit back in its comfortable chairs ,enjoy a selection of snacks and beverages, while listening to music from a selection of CDs. However, its ambience suggests, that it must have been a bar in days of yore, where hunters gathered after a hard of hunting to take about their kill and the adventures associated with it. Now, liquor is hard to get in the heritage town of Ranikhet. Banquets and conferences can be held in the Harkinson Hall. Billiards or snooker, can be played in the designated room housed in the Philips Block. Fitness freaks can use the gymnasium. The helpful staff, will organize taxis, to have you picked up, or dropped off, at any railway station, or at Pantnagar Airport. As also for local sight-seeing. It really does make sense to stay at Windsor Lodge, in Ranikhet, as it is a Welcome Heritage Property, with a comfortable choice of rooms with breath taking views, tasty food, its location in a secluded and quite part of the cantonment and its USP? It lies adjacent to the golf course, where, apart from playing the game, you can use the area around as a picnic spot, or to go for long walks in, without the noise pollution of vehicles with their honking horns! Utter bliss! "Travelling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller". Ibn Battuta
