Tranquil and quaint! Tranquil and quaint!

Me and my fiancee was on a long drive from Guwahati to Umiam and on our way to another spot we located this place and decided to have lunch. It's such an idyllic spot to spend some quality time with your loved one and romantic too. Situated at some 2.5 km from the main road this place is perfect if you want to avoid thr crowded and noisy places. Though they have many items on the menu only few are always available. Try their local Khasi chicken it's amazing. I would recommend trying the local cuisines which they make to perfection. We haven't tried camping yet. But it's ideal to spend half a day here.

I think my 3 star rating is probably on the generous side. Pros; Very affordable accommodation & food. Nice lake view but keep in mind it's at least 1km walk to get to lake Quiet Area Nice outdoor space & picnic tables under trees. Cons; We booked for 4 people. Took many requests to get more than 1 towel, more than 2 pillows or any toilet paper at all. Restaurant and menu is very limited and service is super slow (if anyone there at all) Our kids opened the fridge... I became vegetarian for our time there :) Very basic amenities. No shower/tub only bucket. Strong varnish smell inside cottage. Despite these challenges we had a good time and I think Cafe Umbir has lots of potential to become a lovely place to stay.

Nestled in the lap of nature and overlooking the picturesque Barapani lake is Cafe Umbir. Spic and span with all the amenities available, this place has the perfect setting and ambience to relax and unwind. Added to it is the mouth watering Khasi delicacies. The courteous and warm hospitality of the staff makes your stay memorable. Love to visit again and again.

Four of us decided for a short trip to Barapani in May. We were looking for a quite place without many tourists. I came across Cafe Umbir at Tripadvisor. After visiting their FB page found their number. The person gave a proper description of the place and suggested we take the cottage for 4 people. Once we reached, we met Mr Sanma. He is the caretaker cum cook. The cottage was clean and nice. Although not very big. There was one king size bed and a sofa cum bed with 2 extra dunlops. So sleeping was not a problem for 4 people. But the cottage didn't have room service. So we carried our food and water from the restaurant which was little far. We ordered pork and Sanma suggested roast pork. It was Amazing. Overall experience was satisfactory. The surrounding areas are peaceful. The place has more greenery than people although it is situated in the Umbir village. Looking forward to stay in the tents next time. Price could have been little less though.

When I first visited this place, it was a small restaurant in top of a small hill facing the Umiam (Barapani) Lake in Meghalaya. In Jan 2016, they turned it into a resort, a very quiet place for the travellers. The main guy Sangma makes awesome pork and makes it very comfortable for the people who like staying in the tents. A nice place to visit. Just 80 kms from Guwahati and 20 kms from Shillong.

Demo Trip If you are a group take the bigger independent cottage. They have a small room for 2 people. Tents are good too.

Demo Trip Tents are great. Although if you are a group of more than 3 people, choose the cottages. The cottages come with an extra living room.
