I was in Srinagar during curfew and even though I was aware of that, my arrival at the airport was really intense. Local security guards were asking me what the hell was I doing there and if I didn't saw the news. The tone immediately changed when, from all the required form filling, they understood where I was staying. They quickly reassured me they were good people and would take good care of me. This is because not only Chachoo Palace is located in a safe zone, but because it's a very old respected simple local hotel. You should know when booking that while the surrounding are beautiful and calm, the hotel is very simple BUT if you can look past that (and the mosquitoes) it's an amazing place to stay with stunning views.
The hosts were wonderful to me, and while everything they arranged, food, airport pickup and shikara rides were probably a bit overpriced comparing to what you could arrange at other places, it was always worth it. The food was amazing, specially the tea and the kashmiri bread they serve. The shikara rides were personalized to the places I wanted to visit like the dal lake backwaters and the floating vegetable market. I also have to praise the time they spent before I arrived, keeping me up to date with the current situation in Srinagar (they always emailed me back quickly and always accurately so I would trust them if I was ever unsure if it was a safe time to visit Srinagar), and while I was there they took me to an ATM, and gave me a small tour of the unrestricted parts of the town before I left - free of charge.
This is a beautiful family Hotel, run by simple trustworthy people, I would not hesitate in staying there again and I highly recommend to everyone.
Wow, much more that I could expect during my 20 days stay in Srinagar! This is by far one of the best stay you can find on the shore of Dal Lake. A great charming and peaceful place with beautiful people, owned by Manzoor, friendly and very helpful, he made me feel at home. Very clean place and spacious rooms, comfortable bed, scenic view from the balcony with birds singing, good food, free wifi, safe parking for my motorbike and budget price. No doubt, I'll be back soon.
I definitively recommend this wonderful place to anyone who wants to visit Srinagar.
What a nice place to stay...I spent a few nights in this lovely hotel with my husband.
The room we stayed in was big enough for the two of us and it was very clean. The view from the balcony is so beautiful..we ate our breakfast with a view on the lake, what a great way to start the day.
The owner, Manzoor, is so helpful and really made us feel like home. He also aranged a boattrip on the lake, which we defenately can recommend.
In 2013 I did visit Srinagar and stayed in this hotel. Since I love Kashmir, it's people and climate I decided to come back. The choice was easy....Hotel Chachoo Palace. I did call and had a easy pick up from the airport. Last year there was a big big flood and it destroyed the hotel so the family had to rebuild the hotel fully . And WOW how that turned out beautiful! No ugly unpersonal concrete building but still the charming cute hotel. With wonderfull clean rooms (with carpet), a good shower 24/7 hot water (clean shower too!), free wifi, a English toilet (nice for the ladies), clean sheets and a balcony with a view to die for. They can also cook for you. I love the Kashmiri bread and Kawah tea in the morning, The garden is nice (with grass btw! and wooden benches). One night we had a bonfire in the garden and someone did sing and played the gitar.....magic! It was nice to meet fellow backpackers to chat with and eat together with. Also, the location is good. Walking distance to the Boulevard Road, easy to catch a Riskha and there is a Shikara point nearby (3 minutes) if you want to make a tranquill boat trip on the Dal Lake. What did not change? The two brothers Manzoor and Ghulam do everything to help you and make your stay comfortable. They have still many plans to make the hotel better that it is already is now. For sure I come back to see how that worked out. Manzoor and Ghulam respect for all what you have achieved so far! It must not have been easy. Keep up the good work. So fellow travelers: if you want a relaxed stay at a descent priced place for backpackers go here!
This friendly family hotel is one of the oldest places in Srinagar, and it is run after two generations by the Chachoo brothers, Manzoor and Goulam, sons of the original owner. They will warmly welcome you and pamper you as if you were also a part of their family.
Chachoo Palace was rebuilt from scratch this year (2015) after being almost destroyed by the devastating 2014 floods in Kashmir. Brand new rooms, beds, matresses and toilets with hot showers have now set a new standard of comfort. Please be kind and allow some time for the grass and the flowers to grow back again.
The old wooden building was mindfully replaced by a new modernized one, with solid concrete structure and walls, maintaining nevertheless all the features that returning costumers like me always loved it for. Just more comfortable.
Conveniently located by the water, in the very heart of Dal Gate, this unique cozy home gathers the best of both worlds: the tranquility of the water side, without the hassle of being dependent on a boat to get to shore from a house-boat, and the convenience of being a 2min walk away from a tuc-tuc or a bus, a 10min walking distance from the Boulevard, and a pleasant 20min walk away from Jamia Masjid.
If you can't find it easily by Khona Khan Road is either because your driver doesn't want to take you there, or just because you are too lazy to find it. In either case, you just didn't deserve it. Chachoo palace is not for everyone. Only for the kind of heart.
