We were scared to land in Srinagar during the curfew, but our tour guide gave us confidence to travel there. Shikaras were ready to take us across the lake to the house boat. We love the quaint houseboat, the surroundings, and our caretaker Mr Rahim, who will be waiting for us with his hot traditional tea/coffee to warm us up. We enjoyed a lovely sunset paddle on a Shikara around Dal Lake and the floating market. Garden of Heaven has two self-contained bedrooms, each with a double bed plus a single bed and its bathroom. The dining room, living room and the porch are to be shared by our guests. We can accommodate up to 12 people on our boat. Most importantly, the caretaker Rahim who makes sure you are satisfied and goes that extra mile to make your stay comfortable as well as get you any anything you want. Every minute of your stay will be taken care and Rahim will go out of the way to serve delicious, homemade breakfast, clean up the houseboat. Houseboat experience is a must in Srinagar.
We had booked this accommodation for three nights, but due to unexpected landslides on the Leh to Srinagar, we only managed to stay for one night. We were made to feel very warmly welcomed and shown to a lovely master bedroom with en-suite. Our houseboat manager produced a tasty meal, right on time, and beers were made available in the refrigerator any time we needed. We enjoyed a lovely sunset paddle on a shikara around Dal Lake and the floating market. Little shops selling juice, cigarettes, crisps and chocolates pull up along the houseboat, so you needn't leave to go out to buy a snack. Unfortunately, so do all the other traders haggling and hustling for you to buy spices, saffron, pashminas, jewelry and other items. This can be quite disturbing of your peace, but if you haven't yet shopped up a storm in India, then this could perhaps be a boon. We had completed all our shopping and had spent two days sitting on a mountainside waiting for the road to open, so we just wanted some peace and quiet. Breakfast was served to our taste and then, sadly, we had to depart for the airport. Our shikara was waiting for us, as was our taxi. I'd highly recommend a stay on Dal Lake on this houseboat. It will not disappoint.
