Well the business is neat, most of the people (me included) get over there scammed from Delhi, you get paid food, rooms and internet for few days (internet never worked). Once there they try to convince you to go to overpriced mountain hikes (20-100/day, this is india not the alps!) where you have to pay, again, for accommodation and food, while you had already the one at Srinagar paid. If you say yes its fantastic for them (not for your wallet and freedom) and then when you leave with little baggage they move your remaining stuff to a room in their humble house boat (where i was put after misbehaving, i.e not buying their "tours"). I've seen the bags of the other hikers pilled in that boat house next to the hotel one. Then their resell the room already booked and paid by the hikers and house other people there. The longer the hike, the more they can resell the rooms, being on the same day bookings that have already paid for the room, with 3 of them hiking. Neat I that I can say. If you say NO (i said my budget was 0, worked) life is pushed to be made miserable for you, a lot of Screams, lies dam lies (you will be kidnapped, government taxes, what not...), trying to scare you with killing and drowning you on the lake, not nice, no. I never got to sleep on the neat hotel boat house (i couldn't care less anyway) and I was put on the room of one of the daughters, and when I refused to leave to be send to another boat house far, so I could not talk with other tourists, finally i went. The food and water (paid for) dwindled to almost nothing, to the point that I had to actually beg for the water. In order to come back to the main magestic boathouse I had to promise not to say anything about the deal to other tourists. The other family I was put with was nice at least. And srinagar with all the tourists hiking on the mountains is wonderful! don't let the "riots" stop visiting.
