Maharaja like treatment Maharaja like treatment

This was my all time best stay anywhere till now. We were lucky to chose Paristan Houseboat which got tremendous interior and nice hospitality by owners. It was our Honeymoon trip and I must say that Srinagar is the best place for a endearing and exotic holidays specially for love birds :) . We visited the place in Feb 2009 and that time valley was peaceful so it was a real paradise on earth. Kashmir tourism is very tragic as those guys told me that when it was on peak, that houseboat tariff was 25K per day and because of decline in tourism they were forced to reduce the tariff 5 times lesser and you can't expect more than this. Imagine a place with all carved wallnut wood, with a lovely wallnut bed, and Kashmiri styled ANGITHI, SIGRI and much more. The best thing about this was that were given a private SIKARA to roam in Dal lake like we use scooters/bikes in our house. This houseboat is well situated in heart of Dal lake so you can get a best view. Being in water you can't get a particle of dust even outside and we just loved the place.

Misadventure Misadventure

Having stayed on a Dal Lake houseboat in the past, I was looking forward very much to three peaceful days in July. This was a nice houseboat, if a bit neglected, and in a good location - ghat 15 - with a garden on one side, but the way we were treated was so bizarre, we left as soon as we could. If the owner had not taken two days' advance payment, we would have left on day 2 right after the shabby breakfast ! From the outset, various items were missing, but the owner explained shops were closed 'it's Ramadan' and promised them for the next day. That first night, the amount of food would have been OK for one person, but we were 3. The curry was so salty we could barely get it down ! In 30 years of visiting India, I don't remember having had a bad meal or skimpy servings.... Then he asked: 'what do you want for breakfast?' and when told 'paratha', 'chapati', both a common choice in India, he lost his temper and shouted and waggled his finger at the brazen guest. The next morning we were served one paratha, one chapati ... and none of the promised jam, honey, fruit. On the second night, none of the food had any flavoring or seasoning whatsoever ! We refused to eat it. After 15 minutes or so, we were served the same food, with seasoning, but there was much rumbling and grumbling from the owner's kitchen. It must have been the family's food, since the onion, garlic, ginger, curry ingredients take much more than 15 minutes to prepare. The next morning we packed and ran for our lives, and found a lovely houseboat called 'New Good Luck'.
