We spent four nights in this houseboat group in Srinagar. There was very cold in Kashmir and even colder in the houseboat since we were over the lake. To menage that there was a AC heating system in the bedroom, a fire place in the living room and hot water in the bathroom. The staff was very helpful and kind. Everyday they prepared us delicious dishes from Kashmiri cuisine, excellent tea, cookies, etc. We also made fantastic trips around Kashimir . In fact we can say that we had a fantastic and beautiful immersion in Indian culture and tradition with them.
A friend and I recently visited here in the beginning of winter and were referred by a reputable tourist booking office in Delhi. Overall, our time was very enjoyable and comfortable thanks to the very kind and helpful attendant at the houseboats who is available 24/7. The fire was kept running with wood whenever we were there and the food (breakfast and dinner) we were given was absolutely delicious. However, the boats struggle with providing enough power and the air conditioning won't run unless all the outside lights are switched off. Even when it does run, it barely heats the room but the beds are well equipped with warm blankets. Our main issue was with the cost of the activities offered to us by Ramy, who seems to run things. He quoted INR12,500 each for an afternoon tour of two of the city's gardens (which were dismal that time of year), a trip to Solamarg for a day hike, a ride up the gondola at Gulmarg the next day, and an hour long boat ride with transfer to the airport on our final day. For $250 Australian each, we voiced our objection at the price and he immediately changed the quote to INR10,000 each by giving us a less luxury vehicle, which was still a perfectly comfortable 4WD. Since it was cold and foggy and we had no access to online information, we accepted the steep $200 for a few days of activities. Our driver was excellent and we enjoyed our day trips but still feel (like many other people) that we paid a lot for it. My advice would be to do your research and be firm with Ramy - had we not been hesitant, he would have charged us $100 Australian combined for the difference in car quality - dodgy at best. The accommodation is good, not great, but you'll be well looked after if you decide to stay.
The house boat we stayed in was really cosy with a warm fire, loads of Kashmir tea and delicious food cooked for us. The host of the boat was always making sure we were okay and was incredibly helpful and kind. The only thing to be aware of is the price of the offered tours around the Srinagar area. We saved $100 (Australian) between two of use just by asking for a cheaper car to drive us. So, just check where your money is going before paying. The scenery on the surrounding mountains is really beautiful and definitely worth going to.
Rafik organised my 12 day expedition starting from srinagar. I went on 8 day trek into Himalayas on The great lakes trek. Everything was organised, in a safe and trusting manner, at a difficult time in Kashmir. Spent last 2 nights on house boat and experience was very peaceful, service was amazing and couldn't recommend them any higher! I highly recommend anyone traveling to Kashmir to check out this once in a lifetime experience!
If you look for helpful people in Srinagar, get to know the people behind these houseboats. It's part of a bigger company that will help you in any situation. We had the most amazing experiences with them on a trek. During our time in Srinagar we experienced a strike and curfew which meant we would have been stuck for several days if it hadn't been for Rafiq and his crew who helped us to get a car out of Srinagar when only a few others could use the roads. That was after two days in his own home where he and his family took care of us and made sure we were safe during the strike. Also, I strongly recommend everyone do a hike from Srinagar. You'll travel with horses and guides to lead the way and help you with everything. Many people go to Ladakh to trek but the scenarie here is completely different and you will without doubt meet less foreigners on your trek from Srinagar than from Leh. And to the people from Peace of mind group houseboats; if you read this, I just want to thank all of you so much for making our experience special! I wish all of you the very best. Sincere regards, Christine from Denmark
