Makiko from Udaipur, India recommends this hotel Posted:  Room Quality: 4/5 Service Quality: 3/5 Dining Quality: 3/5 Cleanliness: 4/5

At the first time we reached at the hotel, taxi driver took us the different reception desk, and there is no person there. I'm not sure why, but we had a bad feeling. As there is little tourist in Udaipur this August, we didn't enjoy a lot. Anyway this hotel room is clean, but honestly it is not nice than I expected through some photo.

During our 4 week trip to India we stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate a special birthday. Upon arrival we were advised we had been upgraded to a suite, and we could choose either a large suite or a much smaller one with a lake view. We asked if both suites were quiet rooms and the manager advised both were very quiet. We chose the larger suite-it was very beautiful. Our expectations had been exceeded. Upon returning to our suite in the evening, and switching off the air conditioning, we noticed a loud and continuous noise and observed from the light well outside the room there were two very large extraction pipes right over the top of the room-614. The noise was so loud we slept badly. The next day we mentioned the problem to the reception staff and they said they would look into it. Nobody reported back to us. That night the noise was worse and again we slept badly. As we were told the room was quiet this was disappointing. We once again mentioned it to the reception staff the following morning. They offered a change of room which we accepted. We moved to room 832 Although quieter there was still noise from the hotel extraction system and from the sunset terrace that it overlooked, both at dinner and early at breakfast. Breakfast was equally disappointing for what is a five star hotel, the service was poor and the breakfast staff were rude. Although the reception staff were polite and courteous I would not recommend staying at what is a very expensive overrated hotel.

Arguably the best location in Udaipur. The place to stay in Udaipur in our opinon. Had stayed for our honeymoon. The walk inside the palace gardens at night is just splendid. The lake facing rooms are just spectacular. The Sunset Cafe is one of the places where time just stops and one can spend hours there. The A La Carte menu is fantastic. Each dish we ordered had a distinct taste and the food was delicious. A must visit place.

One can't put the Fateh Prakash Palace in the same league as the Taj Lake Palace or the Oberoi. They may cost the same (sadly) but they are in different leagues. I found no issues with cleanliness or service as I read in other reviews. That said, common areas at the Fateh Prakash are dated and there is a faded glory about the entire place. You can imagine it was once the swankiest hotel in town, perhaps sometime in the 1930s. The furniture in both the common areas and rooms has been around the block, and not in a fine antiques sort of way. The rooms (we had a Dovecote Premier Suite facing the lake, room 501) are very large but are warrens of interconnected small rooms. The included breakfast consists of a few offerings rather than a spread. But if the purpose of your trip is to see Udaipur and not spend all your time in a swish hotel, this is the place. The hotel is right on the lake and within City Palace, the city's key attraction. Because the hotel is owned by the Majarajah, and you are a guest, you have unfettered and unlimited access to the City Palace grounds day and night. Walking through the Palace complex at sunrise when everyone else is gone was amazing. Walking to explore the Old City was a treat. The Taj and Oberoi are so lux but also remarkably far from the Old City (the Taj is in the lake, the Oberoi a good 30 minutes away). The location of the Fateh Prakash is ideal all around and the hotel is architecturally beautiful, comfortable, secure, spacious and clean. Lakefront rooms allow for amazing views, day and night.

Udaipur is lovely and this hotel is on the lakeside and next to all the attractions - we has a suite over looking the lake with a lounge area between the two rooms - really lovely. Greeted at reception with garlands, and dining on the terrace over looking the lake. Would love to go back.

Great view, shame about the rest. Great view, shame about the rest.

This is a Maharajahs palace on the side of a lake, with one of the finest views in Rajasthan. we shared a double suite with friends that had a sitting area between us with views across the Pichola lake. We enjoyed a very pleasant meal on the sunset terrace. You are staying at a living antiquity as the Maharaja of Udaipur still lives there. The staff were less than enthusiastic, and although we were given garlands of flowers on our arrival it was all a bit perfunctory. We asked for the wifi to be fixed and some ice, and both times the member of staff who had performed the task, hovered expecting a tip to the point of embarrassment. Now I must add that I think tipping is a good practice especially as some of the staff are not taking home a fortune in pay, but the staff at the Fateh Prakesh were far too needy without really offering warmth or attentiveness in return. It was only after we went to bed that we found out that our rooms were under the sunset terrace we had music blasting into the night and the moving of chairs and tables at 5.30 in the morning. I did point this out to the manager the next morning as we checked out and to his credit he offered to show us other rooms we could stay in when we returned. We won't be returning. The the decor in the rooms is a bit tired and needs upgrading.
