Royal Opulence Royal Opulence

by JASMEEN-DUGAL on November 22, 2016

From the moment I stepped through the entrance into ShivNiwas Palace, run by HRH Group of Hotels owned by the Maharana, I felt as if though I had been whisked away to a bygone era albeit with modern luxury. Former residence of the Maharana of Udaipur, on the banks of Lake Pichola and part of the City Palace complex, Shiv Niwas Palace is a historical landmark in Udaipur that was built by Maharana Sajjan Shambhu Singh [187484] and finished by his successor Maharana Fateh Singh in the early 20th century as a royal guesthouse. Having hosted George V in 1905, Prince Of Wales Edward, Queen Elizabeth II, King of Nepal, Shah of Iran, Jacqueline Kennedy and Gregory Peck during the shoot of James Bond film Octopussy, the palace hotel continues to host dignitaries and leisure travellers since 1982. As I walked to the reception to check-in on my second day in Udaipur, the hotel management and Mr. Subramanian, Vice President PR, HRH Group of Hotels who had coordinated each aspect of my stay impeccably, were present to greet me and I instantly warmed up to the hotel. Checking into The Royal Suite ensconcing a reception area; a bedroom with a balcony overlooking the cityscape and the hills beyond; a dressing room, luggage room and washroom; a pantry and business room I felt like a Princess! More so, when the management sent welcome flowers, cookies, fruit platter and dried fruits! Unpacking, I walked outside my suite adjacent to the marbled pool and leisurely strolled through the hotel, awe-struck by the priceless art collections including the earliest works of Raja Ravi Verma. The three levels of the palace hotel are arranged in a semicircular arc around an internal courtyard in the midst of which is the pool. The interior features ivory and mother-of-pearl inlay work, glass mosaics and frescoes by Khaja Ustadh and Kundan Lal, whom the Maharana had sent to England to learn the art of glass-mosaic design and to study fresco painting. Sheer magnificence! I had heard lake views from the terrace are stunning and made my way up it was nothing like I had seen before and transfixed by the sheer beauty, I vowed to book a terrace suite [with a private marbled terrace!] on my next trip to Udaipur. Well, time flew and the evening found me refreshed from a leisurely swim followed by a buggy ride to the boutiques within City Palace! Princess Bhargavi Kumari Mewar has a boutique here and I bought a stunning evening bag and coffee table book on Mewar! THIS was truly a vacation since everything is just a few minutes walk awaythe jetty at Lake Pichola, shopping, food and beverage, museum and much much more! Deeply relaxed, I had coffee at European cafe Palki Khana within the complex and headed back to my suite. Tired, I ordered early dinner through in-room dining and the chef was happy to make a bespoke meal when I requested for chamomile tea and grilled vegetables. Before checking out the following morning to head to the airport, I took one last long walk across the stunning palace hotel and understood why it had been honoured with Prestigious Heritage Grand Award; Heritage Award for Excellence; National Tourism Award for Best Heritage Hotel in Heritage Grand Category four times! My last thoughts while boarding the flight back to Delhi Shiv Niwas Palace is a must-stay for both overseas and local travellers who want to enrich their lives with a slice of history and living heritage. I know I will be back soon!

The Maharana of Udaipur himself along with his family stays in a private place inside this City Palace campus. He has converted two parts of the whole Palace building into two hotels - namely Shivniwas & Fatehprakash which are on either side of this spacious campus. His private residential place is in the centre. Shivniwas is thus having a very old but heritage look. However, the building & infrastructure maintenance could have been better. All modern amenities are available though. Rooms are reasonably spacious.

Terrible value for money. In need of urgent renovation Terrible value for money. In need of urgent renovation

I really don't understand all this good reviews I see in tripadvisor. Maybe the more expensive rooms are that better.. Even so.. I stayed in one of the palace rooms and I couldn't be more dissatisfied with the quality of the room considering what we've paid for. The room is very old. Needs an urgent renovation. See the pictures. Does it look like a 4-5 stars? The door is old and hard to close/open, bed is just ok, the shower is very hot or very cold. Really hard to adjust the water temperature and the tea room is so old and ugly. Service is just ok. Breakfast was ok. Far from what expected for the price paid. The only good thing is location inside the palace complex. That's it. I don't remember being so disappointed with a hotel.

Great place, stunning views, bathroom a bit too old. Great place, stunning views, bathroom a bit too old.

We came there on our honeymoon. The staff was very nice (complimentary bottle of wine, rose petals in the bathroom). View from room 15 is stunning. On the lake and one can see 180 degrees. Big comfortable room. Bed and pillows just perfect. Bathroom really old though. Very clean. Perfect location in the city palace, so all walking distance. No noise at all appart from the birds. We had dinner there twice and it was very good and romantic. Go and visit the beautiful bar and the super nice bartender!

Needs a refurbishment Needs a refurbishment

The hotel is part of the palace complex and so is in a great location, although no lake views. The food was good (breakfast and dinner) and staff were helpful. However, while the room was clean, it was straight out of the 1970s and in desperate need of refurbishment. We also stayed at the Jagat Niwas Palace which was cheaper and much better all round. Stay there if you can!
