We settled in on Hotel The Tiger in Udaipur quite frankly in last minute desperation. It being the height of vacation season i.e. Christmas /New Year, we did not really get any great deal on the room as such. We were offered a lake view room for the first 2 nights and a regular room on the other 2 nights, at a total of Rs. 22000 (stay only ).
The hotel is a mixed bag. Firstly the positives - It is centrally located, right on the banks of the lake Pichola and next to the Bagore ki Haveli, one of the top destinations in Udaipur. The lake side view room on the top is actually lake facing .. with a splendind view of the sunset over the lake Pichola. Quite close to the City palace, restaurants and eateries are quite close, within 2 minutes walk from the hotel. The rooms are decently large enough for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. The non-lake facing room was larger than the lake facing room. The staff is quite friendly and warm, and we did not have to fight for anything despite it being the high tourist season. Small things like extra matress for the floor were given without any charge.
The terrace is simply magnificent. Facing the magnificently blue Lake Picchola, the views are unhindered as you look down upon the lake. Watching the sunset or waking up early in the morning cold to see the sunrise had become our favorite pastime for th 4 days that we were at the hotel. That combined with piping hot tea, taken with hot bhaijiyas or french fries for the kids, as you see the sun going down makes for one of the most wonderful memories of the trip for me. (see photos.) Both my kids rather enjoyed the terrace and the views from there.
However not all is hunky dory... there are some significant negative aspects as well. There is no parking. There is one parking lot about 200 meters from the hotel, but it charged me Rs. 500 for 4 nights - that too after significant bargaining. The road leading up to the hotel is so narrow that 2 Maruti Alto cars , side by side would jam the road. The hotel has no lift and the stairs are quite steep. People with bad knees and no daily practice of climbing stairs please stay away. When we had to bring our bags inside, the staff was quite hesitant to help, until we threatened them with complaints. However after that, there were no issues with any matter. The in-house restaurant is good for tea, and some snacks - and nothing more. The food is quite average in quality, considering the steep price.
All things considered, I think it is an hotel with a great location, but marred by poor infrastructure. Also amenities could be better since the pricing is equal to 3-star properties in some towns. Best taken by couples / young adventurers. Families can avoid it (though we rather enjoyed) , old people with struggling bodies can also stay away
1. Locations - 5/5
Located beside the famous Pichhola Lake, this hotel is approx 500 mts away from the Udaipur City Palace. The nearest ghat is Gangaur ghat which is steps away. Beside the hotel is the Bagore Ki Haveli. Jagdish temple is located within 200-300 meters.
So location wise it is very apt for a tourist who wants to minimise the travel distance between tourist attractions.
2. Room - 4/5
Try for the Delux rooms facing the lake. Standard rooms are decent but may vary in size location wise. The rooms are neat and clean and well maintained no doubt.
3. Ambience - 3/5
The main entrance of the hotel is through an alley. It's typical like the other cities in Rajasthan. Reception and the ambience inside the hotel is good and refreshing.
4. Restaurant- 4/5
The restaurant and the food are awesome I must say. There are two seating arrangements- one indoor and the other is open terrace. The terrace has the lovely view of entire Lake Pichola and the Udaipur city. Just opposite of the lake is Restaurant Upre.
The variety of the food may not be large but the food quality and service is very good.
5. Service- 4/5
Service is very good and warm.
Overall rating 4/5. Stay highly recommended.
Had a lovely few days here, very clean room and a shower curtain which is a bonus in India, really good breakfast on the roof top, cracking views of the lake. A good location with coffee shops nearby and many good restaurants, but the hotel restaurant is also good. Would recommend
lake view from rooftop, staff helpful, in the heart of the city near to all attractions, clean rooms
no elevator in this hotel, cabs dont come till gate, no electricity backup. bed is of marble
not wooden so feel cold. wifi was ok
This was my new car's first road trip and the destination we selected was Udaipur. The Tiger one of the top rated Hotel's in 2015 on Tripadvisor, so we decided to go ahead with it. We got two Deluxe Rooms as 2000/- inclusive of breakfast through Go Ibibo which was wonderful considering the location. (right next to Gangaur Ghat).
The hotel's restaurant was under renovation at that time thus was able to provide us with only breakfast. We ordered food from a nearby Restaurant which served great Laal Maas and other chicken items..
The Manager allowed us to consume booze on roof top and also provided staff to serve the food which we ordered from other restaurant. The feel in the hotel was cozy enough and i would recommend to the people who are looking for budget hotels with great locations.
For TV buffs, there was no TV available in some of the rooms, but it does provide free WIFI which has week signal and does not reaches rooms on the second floor.
Tip for people going by their own Vehicle, there is no parking space, thus you will have to part your vehicle in parking near the Jain Mandir...
