If you are not planning to spend too much time in your room and if you get a good discount on the rack rate, you probably won't mind staying in this hotel. But if you are looking for modern amenities and a place at walking distance of the ghats, please look elsewhere. This is one of Varanasi's older hotels and the rooms leave you in no doubt about this fact. Unbelievably, they still have rotary dial telephones which are installed as intercom units. Sadly, these rarely work. That said, the rooms and bathrooms are really spacious and reasonably clean. Hot water is available 24 hours. The food, though, is just about OK. Though the hotel claims on its website that it is 1.5 km from the ghats (I assume they mean the main Dashashwamedh Ghat), in reality its over 2.5 kms. In a city like Varanasi with maniac traffic, it may take half-an-hour to cover this distance. However, autos are easily available outside the hotel and charge Rs 80 to Rs 100 each way. Overall, a comfortable stay if you get the right price package.
Booked it through TripAdvisor/ Agoda. Thank God ,for next three days I had booked another hotel by the name Liberty International by Oyo rooms. Hotel Gautam is not a modern hotel . It needs renovation . Rooms are very old and building is quaint . I paid same price for both Gautam and Liberty International but Liberty is far far better . You can see that Gautam provides an obsolete 14 inch TV . Frankly the price I paid for their average room should be at least 40% lesser . I won't recommend it for a Rs 1300 / per night mark up ,at all .
This hotel at Ramkatora Chowk is just about okay for solo travelers. The rooms are spacious enough and the room service is quick. However the staff is not polite. They have a habit of entering your room after ringing the bell. So please make sure that your rooms are locked. The bathrooms are clean however the taps always drip. Their solar geyser is not effective at all. The two times that I had a bath, I had to make peace with lukewarm water. The waiter serving at the dining hall is old and grumpy and he would scream at you if you ordered a repeat of 'tawa roti'. The only saving grace at Gautam was the receptionist Manglam who was ever so helpful and I rate this hotel as 'Average' because of him otherwise 'Poor' was the way.
We stayed at this Hotel for 3 days. The rooms were good. There were many foreign guests also staying at this Hotel. The best part of the Hotel is that its very clean, the staff is helpful but my suggestion is dont prefer to eat your food at this hotel. The quantity of the food is very less and it takes a lot of time for them to serve you. The place is not so far from the ancient Ganga Ghats and temples. You can get e-rikshaw or auto's just outside the Hotel. Hotel people also make arrangements for you to visit Sarnath and other nearby places on your request. If you wish to have western toilets please tell the Hotel well in advance about it otherwise you might be in problem. If you have elderly people or people with problem in legs or knees please ask well in advance for western toilets. While booking rooms whether AC or Non AC please ensure this thing and ask the Hotel person to write your requirement in advance.
We booked three rooms over telephone. The standard of maintenance and service was perfect. The in-house restaurant and menu was nice and tasty. we ordered special dishes without onions and garlic. they provided with pleasure. KHICDI was awesome. Perfect budget hotel .Thanks to the whole staff particularly Mr Mangalam, manager. I will come back.
