Place is dirty but rooms were decent for the cheap price. Things that left me not wanting to go back was the cook who was actually mean and asked too much money for the food when I checked out. You can't stay up late at this place or make any noises coz the cook sleeps upstairs and don't like people. He complains and even comes to your door if he's not pleased.
I chose Maa Vaishno Guest house given the tight budget i was on during my travels. After much negotiations.. i managed to get a room on the 3rd floor for Rs160 a night. I stayed for 3 nights. Most of the rooms are infested with bed-bugs and need cleaning. The room that i stayed in was literally a furnace and i had to sleep on the terrace to beat the heat. Interestingly, it was a magical experience sleeping under the varanasi sky at a roof overlooking the ganges. I had a nice time chatting with the owners and they were kind enough to help me with an itinerary as well. Their two daughters add to the energy of the place :) I believe the place would be better during winters.
A decent guest house, but in quite a filthy neighborhood. The room was slightly shaggy, but its a very short walk from the Ganges, and what makes the difference is the owners. They are very honest, genuine and helpful. Never hesitate to ask them anything! The WiFi is ok as well. Recommended if you are a budget traveler just staying for a night or two.
The atmosphere is homey and warm, the owner Dinesh is nice and helpful. He explained me about the city and arranged for me a visit in a Sari factory, which was a great opportunity as a photographer. I had a small room - all rooms are very clean, I should say - and an awesome balcony overlooking all the city. Cool place to do Yoga in the morning. There is also a small kitchen - I didn't use it but it can be useful. All and all - a very recommended place! awesome location near Assi Ghat and the more quiet part of the Ganga. Don't think twice - just come ! Ofek, Israel
The good: 1. The room had big windows and was well lit. 2. It was a better value than most places in town (I looked at 6 guesthouses in Varanasi. 3. The owner has a personality that makes you want to like him. The bad: 1. There was chewing gum stuck to the floor, trash left behind on the bathroom floor/shelves, and a dirt smudge on the sheets that clearly showed they hadn't been washed (you must ask him to change the sheets). 2. The room was insanely hot in September, even with the fan. Beware of this place if it's hot outside during your visit. (one room has A/C if you can afford it) 3. The owner will try to convince you to let him order for you at the restaurant next door. Two entrees, one naan, one rice, and one yogurt came to over 600 rupees. This is insane. The rice alone was 100 rupees. The next day I got a premium thali at a place about 5 blocks away for 130 rupees and it included an identical serving of rice. 4. The owner will alert tour salesmen to your presence and have them knock on your door in an effort to sell you something. It's bad enough to have to deal with these guys every 30 seconds walking around on the street. I like to think my hotel room should at least be a sanctuary from them. 5. The massages he's selling are more than twice the price of the very high quality ones offered at a well known riverside guesthouse down the street. 6. Small stuff: No hot water or toilet paper, of course. The WiFi is spotty. There wasn't much rush to switch over to the generator during Varanasi's frequent power outages. And the rooftop has no furniture for lounging on.
