On arrival from the railway station to the hotel the staff was very helpful (otherwise we would have lost in the endless narrow lanes old city of Benaras.)The approach to the hotel is through narrow and not kept clean lanes of old Benaras. One has to go on foot from the main road (approx half a km.). But the hotel staff was very helpful in carrying our luggage from the road head to the hotel. The location of the hotel is ideal for a pilgrimage visit to Varanasi since it is located just on the banks of holy river Ganga and all the important Ghats are very near to the hotel. The rooms were reasonable. However basic necessities such as bucket and mug in the bathroom, door foot mats were missing and provided on demand. House keeping left much to be desired as it was not regular. Fittings in the rooms were not standard that is in one room there was no TV but fridge was provided, whereas in another room no fridge but tv was provided (here no remote control was given hence the tv was useless.)Hence the room rates appeared to be on the higher side considering the quality of rooms. Food was good and reasonable. Service was good. The best part of the stay was provision of local guide by the hotel. The boy was very courteous, punctual and helpful. Overall the stay was good and fruitful. Recommended for stay if one is going on pilgrimage.

The only good thing for the Hotel was its location right on the Rana Mahal Ghat on Ganges itself, which you'll reach through small bye lanes from the Daswasamedh Ghat. All major temples and ghats are very much accessible through the bye-lanes of Varanasi. Its an old palace of Rana of Udaipur which he built for stay at Varanasi which has been converted though unfortunately the rooms are not palatial, quite small. The staff was friendly but service was painfully slow. The Front Desk guy gave some nice tips on sight seeing. It was a Non A/C Double Room There was neither a mirror nor a telephone in the room so you can imagine the rest. The cook had fled hence there was nothing available to eat other than tea. If one wants to have a frugal stay for a day in Varansi on the banks of Ganges then its OK.

The location of thew room, esp room no.507 is fantastic. The view of the Ganga is unbeatble. The staff are polite and helpful.Acess is by traversing thru the gullies and you should like the feel of olld Kashinagri rather than the modern Banras.Acess to all facilities is there.Restaurant need improvement but they will go the extra mile to accomodate your request.Very safe.Crowd is excellent and no drugs are allowed.Excellent for asafe stay while experining the Ganga and the Ghats at close quarters.

Great Place to stay right on the Banks of Ganga. Fortunately got the river view room as requested and it was just awesome. Clean rooms and great service. Dining options were OK.

We felt that we are in Home and did not feel any trouble during stay. The Room is specious and toilet is wide and clean with running Hot & Cold Water. Sufficient Toilet papers, soaps and towels and changed as and when necessary. Foods are of good quality and easily digestible and less spicy. The stuff members are really very co-operative and well behaved. They even allowed me to use their computers and internet for booking my Train Ticket. The only drawback is one cupboard is necessary in the Hotel room in order to keep clothings. The view of Varanasi from Hotel Balcony is very nice. So I would definitely recommend this Hotel if any one wants to visit Varanasi.

Palace on Steps Varanasi Palace on Steps Varanasi

by Katze049 on March 15, 2017

In february 2017 I visited Varanasi the 3rd time. I decided to stay in Palace on Steps, Rana Mahal Ghat. I had a nice room , also a nice bathroom, everything proper and clean. The location of this property is excellent: you walk a view steps down to the Ganges, in some more minutes you will reach the Main Ghat, Dasawamedh. This place is very interesting and amazing. Every evening you can attend Ganga Aarti, a very impressive ceremony in honour of Mother Ganga. Palace on Steps I can recommend to everybody, it is safe and very clean. The stuff is very polite, friendly and helpful. To this property belongs a roof top restaurant, with a breathtaking view over the Ganges. The food is very delicious and you have a choice among a great variety of dishes. The waiters up there are very friendly and working perfectly. Whenever I will plan to travel to Varanasi, Palace on Steps will be my first choise.

Amazing room with breathtaking view. I absolutely love it. Sunrise in front of you. Excellent service. I hope to come here again:) Very friendly and helpful. My room is very clean and has a small balcony. Sri Lahari mahasay (Great yogi ) was meditating in this room.

I stayed in room 205, a Ganges faced singel room for a budget price incl. breakfast. The room has a little side balcony overlooking the Ganga. There is no airco, tv, hot water or sink in this room (other rooms have). You have to brush your teeth in the shower. But the room is atmospheric (part of the old Gangafaced-structures), fresh and cool, well maintained, clean and quiet. A pleasure to stay in. Sheets and towels are changed every day, floors are scrubbed. If you want the first sunbeams to wake you up, you are by yourselves and have little money to spend, this is the place. The rising sun over the Ganges is shining straight into your bed. When you go out on your private balcony you can watch the boots and morning rituals at Ganges River right in front of you. Staff/owners are friendly and helpful. Rooftop restaurant overlooking the river is clean and good. Location is perfect, right in the center and 5 min from Dashashwamedh (main) Ghat. Auto-rickshaw from or to Varanasi JN station INR 150 (till crossing). From there you have to walk the last part ca 1 km. Beware of passing by monkeys on the balcony.

I stayed in the Maharaja room, one of many, with balconies overlooking the Ganga. the room has a high dome ceiling and my meditations were very deep. The sun rose above Ganga and came right into my room. They have several rooms facing Ganga, but this is my favorite room, with wifi and breakfast at the sunrise restaurant on the top.

Gorgeous location, tiny rooms. Gorgeous location, tiny rooms.

The hotel is situated on the famous ghats of Benaras. Although it takes quite a few really large steps to reach the hotel (not recommended for senior citizens) you go through the famous winding narrow galiyaan and finally reach a big open courtyard filled with blooming bougainvillaea. Our room was one level below the courtyard, facing the river. We were lucky to find a room available, as we arrived on the evening of the famous Dev Deepawali. The staff was more tha accomodating about our last minute booking. Although the room was small and sparsely furnished, it was comfortable and had everything we needed. The bathroom needed a bit of repair work as the water kept overflowing. Fresh water was available on our arrival. The bed took up most of the room but afforded beautiful views of the reiver, especially the sunrise, right from the bed. We had one dinner at the rooftop and two breakfasts. The food was homely and filling. The cheese and mushroom pasta was sinfully delicious. A decent selection of cold Indian beer was available as well. We were visiting with a few university friends of ours from Italy, and they seemed to like the pasta! :) Breakfast was also served hot, and the aloo parathas with eggs was quite heavy and delectable. The check out was quick and courteous. Would love to visit again. :)
