In february 2017 I visited Varanasi the 3rd time. I decided to stay in Palace on Steps, Rana Mahal Ghat. I had a nice room , also a nice bathroom, everything proper and clean.
The location of this property is excellent: you walk a view steps down to the Ganges, in some more minutes you will reach the Main Ghat, Dasawamedh. This place is very interesting and amazing. Every evening you can attend Ganga Aarti, a very impressive ceremony in honour of Mother Ganga.
Palace on Steps I can recommend to everybody, it is safe and very clean. The stuff is very polite, friendly and helpful. To this property belongs a roof top restaurant, with a breathtaking view over the Ganges. The food is very delicious and you have a choice among a great variety of dishes. The waiters up there are very friendly and working perfectly. Whenever I will plan to travel to Varanasi, Palace on Steps will be my first choise.
Amazing room with breathtaking view. I absolutely love it. Sunrise in front of you.
Excellent service. I hope to come here again:)
Very friendly and helpful.
My room is very clean and has a small balcony.
Sri Lahari mahasay (Great yogi ) was meditating in this room.
I stayed in room 205, a Ganges faced singel room for a budget price incl. breakfast. The room has a little side balcony overlooking the Ganga. There is no airco, tv, hot water or sink in this room (other rooms have). You have to brush your teeth in the shower.
But the room is atmospheric (part of the old Gangafaced-structures), fresh and cool, well maintained, clean and quiet. A pleasure to stay in. Sheets and towels are changed every day, floors are scrubbed.
If you want the first sunbeams to wake you up, you are by yourselves and have little money to spend, this is the place. The rising sun over the Ganges is shining straight into your bed. When you go out on your private balcony you can watch the boots and morning rituals at Ganges River right in front of you.
Staff/owners are friendly and helpful. Rooftop restaurant overlooking the river is clean and good. Location is perfect, right in the center and 5 min from Dashashwamedh (main) Ghat.
Auto-rickshaw from or to Varanasi JN station INR 150 (till crossing). From there you have to walk the last part ca 1 km.
Beware of passing by monkeys on the balcony.
I stayed in the Maharaja room, one of many, with balconies overlooking the Ganga. the room has a high dome ceiling and my meditations were very deep. The sun rose above Ganga and came right into my room. They have several rooms facing Ganga, but this is my favorite room, with wifi and breakfast at the sunrise restaurant on the top.
The hotel is situated on the famous ghats of Benaras. Although it takes quite a few really large steps to reach the hotel (not recommended for senior citizens) you go through the famous winding narrow galiyaan and finally reach a big open courtyard filled with blooming bougainvillaea. Our room was one level below the courtyard, facing the river. We were lucky to find a room available, as we arrived on the evening of the famous Dev Deepawali. The staff was more tha accomodating about our last minute booking.
Although the room was small and sparsely furnished, it was comfortable and had everything we needed. The bathroom needed a bit of repair work as the water kept overflowing. Fresh water was available on our arrival. The bed took up most of the room but afforded beautiful views of the reiver, especially the sunrise, right from the bed.
We had one dinner at the rooftop and two breakfasts. The food was homely and filling. The cheese and mushroom pasta was sinfully delicious. A decent selection of cold Indian beer was available as well. We were visiting with a few university friends of ours from Italy, and they seemed to like the pasta! :)
Breakfast was also served hot, and the aloo parathas with eggs was quite heavy and delectable. The check out was quick and courteous. Would love to visit again. :)
