The place is the best one in Varanasi, located right in front of Ganga River, the view is really good and is very near to Assi Ghat, the first one of an 84-series and therefore near downtown Varanasi. They serve quite a good breakfast and the place counts with a fast food Indian style bar. The rooms are big and though sometimes they are in need of some cleaning, staff is always ready to serve. The prices are regular The services include clothes washing, ayurvedic massages, tour guide, and daily yoga practice. It's my second stay at the Yoga Mandir, and both times I enjoyed it.
For many reasons I can say without mistake that this is the best place to stay in Varanasi. The owner, Mr Sapan Mishra and his father, are greats persons, very helpful and they makes you feel at home. They give very good information of places to visit, transportation and all you need. And also yoga classes, massage, philosophy and great chatsm The hotel has beautiful rooms with unbelievable views to Ganga Holy River. Don't think twice! Stay at Sri Yoga Mandir
Sri Yoga Mandir functions as a normal hotel, with yoga available as an extra option. There's a restaurant on the third floor, too. We were lucky to find this place available during the high season. The manager, Sapan, was super friendly and accommodating, and was very good to us. The location is great, right on the river and a 5-minute walk south of Assi Ghat (via a dusty mud field scattered with cows, stray dogs, and kite-flying, cricket-playing kids). The nicest thing about that location is the view -- every room on the north side of the building has an unobstructed window view of all of Varanasi up along the river. For an even better view, head upstairs to the roof and catch some rays. Six things to be aware of: - the beds are very very hard and the pillows are very thick, FYI. Don't expect stain-free sheets, but you can expect that they will be recently washed. You can ask for a top sheet and an extra towel. - since Varanasi is a dusty, dirty place, no street shoes are allowed to be worn in the hotel (a wise rule). So bring slippers or other indoor shoes of some kind, or else you'll end up with very cold feet from the nice marble floors. - the bathroom in our room had a western toilet, but no toilet paper. It was also one of those bathrooms where the whole room is the shower, so everything gets really wet and messy -- not my favorite. - try not to run the AC and the hot water heater at the same time, or you could trip a circuit breaker (or MCB as they call it). Not a big deal to fix though. - It can get pretty cold at night, but they will give you an extra blanket if you need it. - Sapan can arrange a boat ride for you for the morning (bundle up if it's winter!). Although you will not get an English-speaking guide, the morning ghat rituals speak for themselves. Price is cheaper than suggested by the lonely planet guide, especially given that it's just you and the boatman. The hotel is quieter than many places in Varanasi that are right on the louder ghats -- this place is about a 5-10 minute walk south of the south end of the main stretch of ghats. But it's not 100% silent -- you'll hear the occasional moo or motorcycle in the early morning, and if you have one of the north-side rooms you'll hear the loudspeaker and bells from the 5am-7am daily rituals at Assi Ghat. But that's all part of the experience and is quiet enough to be mostly drowned out by your AC. Directions: To get there from the airport, tell the taxi office to take you to Ravidas Park -- they should know where that is. The car can indeed get all the way to the door of the hotel -- pass Ravidas park on your right, then turn right, and then turn left (north) at the big painted sign on the wall that says something about yoga. The Sri Yoga Mandir building is at the end on the right, up against the dusty empty field -- it's bright blue with a yellow/orange metal gate door. Overall, we were really happy with Sri Yoga Mandir! We had a delightful, meditative experience basking in the sun on the inner balconies and the roof after our long sight-seeing mornings in Shiva's city.
We had a nice week at sri Yoga Mandir. A very peaceful place directly on the banks of the Ganges. 4 minutes walk to Assi ghat. It is also possible to book yoga courses there and there is a nice restaurant with healthy and tasty food on the top floor. We asked the manager to organize taxis and a boat for us which he did very well.
If you go to Varanasi this is THE place to stay! We can only praise it. Right on the Ganges just before assi Ghat. Soooo quiet. We are afraid if we praise it too much....everybody will go there....then the price will go up.....the atmosphere would change. As it is , is wonderfull. Very good vibrations, the owner kind. Place fantastic. Food is simply great. Don't expect 3 star but what they make is good and clean.
