Small and friendly resort hotel in Varkala Small and friendly resort hotel in Varkala

by Hans-Juergen H on March 21, 2017

My wife and I had booked this medium sized hotel for five nights assuming it was somehow located on the cliffs overlooking the beach. Although this was not exactly the case it shouldn`t take you more than a few minutes to walk to the cliff and enjoy the view from the cliff walkway overlooking the large beach some 100 steps below. Once you have descended the rather steep steps you`ll find yourself on one of the two major beaches of Varkala. Yes, this beach is very wide and popular with tourists and locals alike but lacks toilets, changing rooms, concession stands and restaurants and above all there is absolutely no shade. If you want shade you are better off staying at the lovely garden and pool of the Deshadan Hotel or on the cliff walkway where you would find plenty of restaurants, bars and Ayurveda massage places. Depending on where you stay you may want to take a tuk-tuk ( the Indian threewheeler equivalent of a local taxi) for little money to visit the other major beach of Varkala which is popular with locals. Although there are no cliffs or steps to reach this beach there again is no shade on the beach. There are however a few old and uncomfortable beach chairs and ancient umbrellas for rent at high prices. Your best bet would therefore be to sit at a table and have a tea or soda and something to eat at one of the two reasonably priced beach restaurants nearby. As a result we liked the quiet pool area, garden and palm trees at the Deshadan much better than the local beaches. The guest rooms and bathrooms are ok. There is free WiFi which works best in the restaurant and the reception area and the tv channels also include multilingual news and entertainment programs. The service at the hotel and in the restaurant is great and the staff is friendly and helpful. We liked the food both at breakfast and dinner featuring not only delicious Indian cuisine but also western food. Our recommendation for Varkala: Stay at the Deshadan Cliff Hotel.

Prons Rooms are okay good AC . Nice tree around, staff is good , good corporative ,neat and clean hotel Cons Small property, food is below average , pool is not clean , little high priced for avg property. Beach is 5 10 min walking but that walking street is very strange not for lonely girls and specially coming out in night .. Varkala is having limited hotels , disnt found beach hotels also so this is okay but location is not on beach dispooint me and even you cant walk late evening to that street .. Dont miss varakala beach . One of the best indian beach.

We were extremely happy with our room it had adequate air conditioning and also a fan the shower and bathroom was clean there was plenty of towels and we slept very well. The hotel has a very nice pool with loungers around it we found the breakfast to be the best that we had had in India and you could order American pancakes or omelettes or other types of Western food along with the traditional Indian food. The position of the hotel is excellent as it is literally a five minute walk from the beach. The people that manage the hotel are extremely friendly and nice... I like them alot. The only thing I would change here is improve the Wi-Fi slightly so this is little bit quicker other than that this stay was perfect.

I was really pleased with my evening meal at the resort on Feb 14. I had become ill from eating in an outside restaurant on the cliff a few nights before and choose the Deshadan restaurant as a safe place to start dining again. I had an awesome North Indian meal which the waiter Rahul recommending after listening my stomach tales. He was very considerate and exceptionally thoughtful, I was very comfortable and he restored my confidence in Kerala food safety standards. Thanks Rahul!!

This was our first time staying In Kerala. The hotel was perfect for us, quiet and relaxing in an ideal location just a short walk to the beach and cliff top restaurant. The manager Sajin was the perfect host, the help he gave us arranging things made all the difference, The trips with a driver we went on gave us a real in sight to the area and what Kerala was about. we only stayed for 5 days and wished we had booked for much longer. Our room was very spacious and I enjoyed the breakfast you could have traditional Kerala, pancakes any type of eggs, We had an evening meal here and it was one of the best meals we had. We will definitely be returning to this hotel.
