Nice place on the Varkala cliff Nice place on the Varkala cliff

by vivera073 on February 5, 2012

We stayed there only one night so my review is based on that. Rooms were clean and there were nice balconies with sea view in front of the rooms. The location is really great, not far from the beach and in the middle of the restaurant/shopping area. There was also availability to yoga at the rooftop but didn't have opportunities to try that.

Good basic hotel Good basic hotel

by lovetravelling on November 18, 2011

Basic, cheap and cheerful, good value for money. Room was large and clean, clean linen, large bathroom with shower - our room had aircon as well as fan and was very cool and pleasant, bed quite comfortable. Balcony outside room with great views of beach/cliffs, balconies were "sectioned" by low walls and we were able to keep in touch with our friends in the next room. Staff very helpful and friendly. Restaurants very near the entry to hote, we ate at Clafoutis most of the time, shops and a travel agent also very nearby. Good base for exploring the area. I would recommend this hotel to backpackers, young couples, solo travellers.

Great budget hotel Great budget hotel

I found this hotel from the lonley planet and gave them a call to book a room. As it was low season i got an amazing deal where i paid 499 a night. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the room. The bathroom was also clean and big. Did need to ask them to givemy room a clean, but i found most budget hotels need to be asked. The room had a musquito net but was a bit grimey so didnt use it but never got bitten by any as i usually wear repellent. Sheets were clean too. Each room has a small sitting area outside where you can see some of the cliffs and watch the waves. The location was perfect, it was further up, but not too far, from most of the action, but nice and quiet as no cars/rickshaws can drive that far up the cliff. Get the rickshaw to drop you off at the helipad and keep on walking up along the cliff just past Clafouti restaurant. The staff were all male and they were a fairly young team who were smiley, polite and usually having a laugh. As a solo female I never felt intimidated or uncomfortable around them. All in all a good find and I ended up staying a few extra days.

A most welcoming host A most welcoming host

Varkala is one of those hippy backpacker hangout resorts that all countries in Asia seems to have at least one of. There are several accomodations perched along the clifftop. I would recommend this one for those who like the cheap and very cheerful. The rooms are basic but very clean and the comfort is adequate. However the view over the sea and the location just off of the path along the front are superb. All rooms have an outside balcony area that is great for hanging out on after a day at the beach. Best of all is the service from the staff, especially the manager Stanley. He is very warm and cheerful and very informative and helpful, Also worth a mention is the cafe attached to the resort, very good and cheap for breakfast.

Best views, best host (Stanley) in Varkala Best views, best host (Stanley) in Varkala

We were lucky enough to get rooms for the seven of us upstairs on the second floor. The balcony, which has views to die for, was ideal for a group like ours because it was sectioned but still enabled us to get together. The Hill Palace gets the breeze so we did not need to airconditioning - fans sufficed. The rooms were clean, comfortable and "roomy". Stanley, the host, is "the best". He is friendly and interesting to talk to and picked up on our cues regarding the things we wanted to do. He arranged activities for us without being pushy and was keen to get feedback about how things went. We were all impressed - some of our group will going back to stay in January!
