Poor, much better places in Varkala to stay Poor, much better places in Varkala to stay

by Pete2591 on February 7, 2017

Booked 3 nights here online at Unfortunately all the space in the dorm was taken so I stayed in a Deluxe Double Room for 3900 INR. The room was ok, very expensive for a room that didn't have AC and had cold water from the shower. Also the wifi didn't work in my room and the fan was very loud so you couldn't have it on all night as it would keep you awake. The staff are friendly and has a great common room area to meet other tourists and travellers. That's the only reason why this hostel is so highly rated. And it's only a 5 minute walk from the beach. But I think there are much better hostels/home stays in Varkala which are the same price if not cheaper.

Shiva Garden is an amazing place to be. Varkala is a strange place. It's touristy but also relaxed and chill. Shiva garden is the best place to stay, I'm sure. The rooms are basic but clean (and not expensive!). Just ask to see all the rooms available because some are nicer then others. But all are fine. The morning yoga is relaxed and for all levels. The food is very good (especially masala dosa) and all the people are friendly and loving. You can fill your days easily with just relaxing in the hammocks, doing yoga, drinking chai and juices, talking to interesting people and playing with the children. What's not to love?

Great atmosphere Great atmosphere

I stayed for 4 nights on 2 separate occasions and both times enjoyed the lively atmosphere, chilled out vibe, good food and great company. I slept in the dorm, situated on a rooftop, the mattresses are very comfortable and mosquito nets effective. The staff are attentive, friendly and warm and the cost very reasonable..... They offer Yoga in the mornings, hammocks are available for lounging around with a good book and the beach, restaurants and bars are only a 3min walk away. I highly recommend this place for a long or short stay....

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodby so hard... How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodby so hard...

When I was leaving Shiva Garden the saying from Winnie the Pooh came up to my mind: How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodby so hard... I spend in Varkala more than one month and visited most of the places and Shiva Garden was still my favorite place to come back and call it home for a while. Shiva garden is perfect place to meet great people - not just travelers but as well local community and artists. The staff makes you feel like home and takes care of all your needs - may it be food, rentals, advices and information, or just a chat and home feeling. The community and home feeling support very nice and friendly owners, their two childern, dogs and their friends who come by many times and are allways open to share time, conversation or some skills with you. This place offers space and equipment to spend your time - may it be reading books in hammock from shared library, sport and movement activities like volleyball, basket, cricket, boxing or slack line. Everyday there is yoga lesson open for all levels and from time to time there is possbility to join some workshops from locals or fellow travelers. You may as well join worskhop or therapy session with Sonia - you can find out more in the website. Definetly worth it to try some of the sessions or courses. They have their own kitchen where they offer tipical indian food, very nice and tasty. Shiva Garden is situated in 5 minutes walk from the main beach and its in location where you can find shops, restaurants or go to the hotel next door and spend the day in the pool.

Best place to relax while meeting people from all around the world Best place to relax while meeting people from all around the world

It is the perfect place to relax, meet cool people, socialize discover all the things India has to offer. It is not placed on the clift which makes the location calm but only 2 min walk away from all the shops and the restaurants. Rooms and the toilets in them are clean following the indian standards. the owner is extremly kind and will do anything in his hands to help with any problem regarding or not the hotel or acomodation. Sonia, his wife, has her own accademy in which she offers a wide variety of courses and therapies. Definitely worth it to jump into a reiki session or any course they offerseveral things like excursions, bike and board rental surf classes, the surf instructor is nothing but cool and very commited to making you stand on the board They have their own kitchen where they offer tipical indian food, very nice and tasty. There is an other hotel next door that will allow you to spend the day there using the swiming pool for around 300 rupies.
