We did not see one adult in the staff during our three-night stay. The kids in the staff were however quite accommodating and helpful, although they should rather have been enjoying the winter holidays elsewhere, instead of having to run a bed and breakfast.
The room was very shabby. Severe moisture damages on the walls, to the extent that the wall paint sporadically fell off as small crumbs on the beds. The mosquito nets were damaged and did not stop anything from entering the room. No towels, we had to ask for it. Neither was toilet paper nor soap included, but was available for sale in the shop across the street. No hot water.
For the faint-hearted: You might want to choose some other accommodation since our room was regularly visited by lizards, slugs and giant spiders.
The beds were alright and we had wifi connection in our room, although it was rather slow.
This is a decent budget hotel, breakfast was included, eggs on toast was edible, good cup of tea, no cleaner came to the room throughout 6 nights we were there. Manager Deepak was friendly and helped us sort a few things out. There was a burglary in the night whilst we were there, don't put belongings on the tables under the windows. Would recommend to budget travellers only.
As the title says, the hostel offers an ok value for the price, mainly since latter is pretty low. It seemed, they didn't know at what rate they had offered the rooms on hostelworld. We found that different booking sites stated different rates and the guy working there asked us a couple times about the price on our booking confirmation. So maybe a quick call could save you some money. Also you should bring some mosquito repellant, because the nets they have attached to the windows have so large holes they could aswell have spared the effort and there were no mosquito nets for the bed. In our opinion you can get much nicer accommodation in varkala for just a little bit more money (like we decided to do after one night there).
A wonderful stay here. Stayed for 5 days and could stay longer! You feel right at home. Beautiful place to stay, set back a bit from the beach making it a relaxing place. You feel so welcome and if you need anything, nothing is too much for them. Great price as well. Would deff recommend to anyone.
Arriving well after 1am, the manager, Deepak was on hand to receive and show us our rooms. Spacious, clean and colourfully furnished - exactly what was required after a long day of travelling from the north. After breakfast later that morning, his assistant, Sundays(sp?) escorted us to the beach, which is in easy proximity. In retrospect, being slightly away from the beach is an advantage, particularly if you're looking for some quiet time, as the seafront area tends to be quite busy into the night. Shops and restaurants are open for business.
Skylark - and its partner hotel, Sherin Cottage (opposite, where breakfast is served) are wonderfully tranquil places that quickly impress on you the famously laidback atmosphere that Kerala is known for.
In addition to which, both Deepak and his assistant were extremely knowledgeable about local services, and recommended places of interest and current events we wouldn't have known about otherwise. These included a good quality Ayurvedic clinic (important), spas for massage (ditto), a festival and connecting us to a superb houseboat operator for the backwater cruise which followed. We spent three very comfortable and relaxed nights at Skylark and I'd have gladly extended my stay at this charming hotel were it not for the cruise.
