Overpriced ! Overpriced !

Had booked the Taj from booking.com, and before arrival , they had enquired when was the check-in, and I said 12 and they just said OK thankyou . We reached hotel at 1.50 pm and we were told to wait for 10 mins for the room to be ready since their check-in time was 2 pm ! Duh they expected us to wait 2 hrs if we had come at 12 ?? If only they had informed us, we could have had lunch n come . There was no bathtub as advertised in booking.com . Nor the breakfast was complimentary. The property is situated "according to environmental norms " away from beach....But it really doesn't feel like Taj ! There was no luxury felt anywhere !! The lobby was huge. The swimming pool was neat , from 3 ft to 8ft depth . The rooms were congested . Hardly space to walk after the queen size bed ! Though twas superior sea view rooms, the view wasn't that great as advertised. It's a far far sea view. The bathrooms were just average. The breakfast was terrible at 750 per person inclusive of taxes !!!! The donuts weren't soft...The cashew nuts seemed like the cheap ones u get in 20 rupee packets Seriously, this place is a rip off for the brand name of Taj. There are better places to stay , close to the beach at North cliff . Better sea view...Better food.. better value for money ! Book only if ur aim is to get tanned lying by the swimming pool and enjoy calm breeze , staying in an average room, having average food , paying luxury tax in an overpriced hotel

From what I could see, it is the best hotel in Varkala. Amazing food at dinner, some of the best we had on our 2-week trip around India. Good, varied breakfast buffet, nice pool area, spacious rooms. 5 minute walk to the beach, a further 5 minutes to the cliff. Unfortunately, the whole hotel is in need of some tlc. While the rooms were clean and modern, the bathroom needed regrouted, the pool chairs were worn-looking, there was blue tarpaulin hanging off the roof, the room service menu was dirty and worn, the walls needed repainting, etc. The pool was also a bit slimey, I don't know why. Lovely hotel but needing a facelift if marketing as 4*.

Had a wonderful time. Good food and amazing service. Was delighted by the level of attention and promptness of the staff. Beautiful lawns and an amazing pool where we spend the whole day enjoying every moment of our get together.

This is a very comfortable hotel. Our room had a distant sea view and a balcony, which we couldn't use much because it was too hot to stay outdoors for long. Breakfast was the usual buffet fare - omelette, limited cereals, breads, pastries and Indian dishes. Dinner was a la carte (not sure if there was a buffet, but we weren't offered one) and everything we ordered was delicious, including fresh seafood. I had an ayurvedic massage there and it was wonderful, albeit a bit expensive because it was the hotel's spa. The pool was great and big enough for a good swim. The only problem with the hotel is that it is quite a distance from the seafront and the many restaurants there.

The room was very spacious and comfortable, and we slept very well. We'd been staying in cheaper places in Kerala and wanted to treat ourselves to a night in a nice room and the Gateway provided that. Staff were good, very keen to help. Only minor quibbles: the shower wasn't very hot (although this was ok given the climate) and we were not allowed to order from the a la carte breakfast menu. Otherwise, it was a good stay.

Demo Trip Get the suite if possible. Otherwise the rooms right on the either side of the main lobby have a slightly bigger balcony than others.
