We have just spent 10 nights at the Oceano cliff. When we first arrived, we were disappointed in the room because it bore no resemblance to any of the photos we had seen on the internet! We had also booked a standard room and it was really small with nowhere to store any personal items, nor any cupboards, so we wondered if we had been given a lower grade room - which, it transpired, we hadn't.(we decided that Standard rooms are the same as budget rooms, only you get a little balcony or terrace as well). My advice is not to look at the management photos of the rooms before you go. Lower your expectations of what the room will be like, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. :-) I am going to start with the less positive things about the hotel - and then I'll talk about why we had such a lovely time there and would probably return at a future date. So: This hotel is not suitable for people who demand a high standard of accommodation - the rooms do not have air conditioning, there is just a fan above the bed. Our room had two tiny bedside tables, one larger table with a thin drawer and an open area with a few coat hangers, but no "cupboard" to put any clothes away from general view, and no chest of drawers. In fact, no furniture to speak of, other than the beds. The bathroom was also basic, nowhere to store anything and the shower water simply goes on the floor so it stays wet for quite a lot of the time. If you have mobility difficulties, this hotel might not be the best choice, because there are 200 steps down to the beach, assuming you'd want to head down there - and then you've got to get back up again... ( we were grateful for the exercise, as the food was much too good... but, just to let you know...) Now the positive things: If you are the kind of person who loves to "get back to nature" without actually camping outside (!), this hotel would probably be just up your street. We loved the gardens and the tranquility of the place. We enjoyed the simplicity of the hotel (once we had put away our higher expectations) and the views from the garden across the water below are divine. After just 24 hours there, I felt completely relaxed and had seriously begun to unwind. There is a "sister" hotel, the Oceano Eco, which is a few steps along the road. The rooms there are apparently a lot bigger, but not necessarily more plush (we didn't see them, just heard about them). The Eco has the most glorious pool which we were invited to use - and we certainly did use! It was so quiet, so we often had the whole pool to ourselves. There was never a fight for sun loungers, although maybe it was a quiet time for them. But, having read some other reviews about the Oceano Cliff, I am puzzled why the staff are not more highly praised. We both felt that the staff were one of the best things about the hotel! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The staff on reception are lovely and all the staff who look after the gardens and the rooms were always smiling and happy to greet us. The "Maitre d' " of the restaurant, Shama, was absolutely perfect. Nothing was too much trouble. We left early on our return home, and he made sure we had a little picnic breakfast ready for us. Every breakfast time, he made sure we had everything we needed - by the way, breakfast is fantastic. Lots to choose from. The dinners and lunches were nice too and you can sit at the little huts and overlook the ocean as you dine. Glorious! One evening, the stars were so bright, we could see Venus, Mars and Uranus! Back to earth, there is filtered water permanently on tap in the restaurant area and in reception, and the bottled water in the rooms is replenished daily. We had 3 massages during our stay and they were wonderful - Jubeeriya is the lady to see, if you like a strong massage - we had rejuvanation, 1.5 hours of serious, deep tissue massage. Great! So, to sum up, provided you are fairly fit with reasonable mobility, and if value the beauty of nature above man-made creature comforts, this hotel would be a good choice. We didn't want to leave and have returned home feeling completely refreshed and ready to get back to work.
