Bardez, when literally translated means Bara desh or twelve countries. The term “country” here could probably refer to the clan territorial limits or the twelve Bhramin comunidades which include Aldona, Anjuna, Assagao, Candolim, Moira, Nachinola, Olaulim, Pomburpa and Salvador do Mundo, Sangolda, Saligao, Serula and Siolim. Bardez is not only a popular region for tourists, but is well populated residential area. Located in this region is the St. Xavier College and the Institute of Hotel Management, Goa. Some of the famous sites in this region are the beaches of Anjuna, Baga, Candolim, Calangute, Sinquerim and Vagator. Also situated here is the Monte Guirim boarding school which after Pombals devastation was restored by Padre Luna. Bardez is also home to some of the prominent village communities namely Siolim, Colvale, Moria, Porvorim, Penha da Franca, Salvador do Mumdo, Sagolda and Saligao. The region and taluka situated in the North of Goa is called Bardez. To the north of this region is the Chapora River, on the east is the Mapusa River and the Mandovi River is to the south.
